not sure where that data was pulled from but phillypolice.com has murders in philly as of this morning at 319 for the year. chart in OP shows 240 as of 6/26. Philly didn't have 79 murders in the month of july.
either way the numbers overall are out of control.

It was uncovered earlier this year that they were not reporting all of their murders, though.
If I learned anything from watching "The Wire", it's that police brass have no problem "juking the stats".

Birmingham is skewed by the fact that the city itself has most of the bad areas while the nicer areas are spread out among different suburban cities.

Memphis, Jackson, MS, a couple others.
List is incomplete
This list is ordered by murder RATE.
From the article on Fox:
quote:
"Memphis is an interesting city," he continued. "The most of the crime happens in certain zip codes, which are the lower-economic zip codes. … But they don't have too much crime in the tourist areas. It's mainly in the lower-economic neighborhoods. And a lot of times it's crime with people that know each other, domestics, things like that. It's not just this unique city. It's what happens in other parts of the country."

While Jackson, Mississippi, did not appear on Asher's list (it has an estimated population of less than 200,000), the city recorded about 153 homicides in 2021, pegging the homicide rate at 99.5 per 100,000 residents. So far this year, the city has recorded 70 homicides, putting it on track to reach a similar murder rate by the end of 2022, according to WLBT.

Memphis, Jackson, and Montgomery are not on that list. That is fascinating
there are plenty of gaps on that list, i am sure Houston has a high murder rate than Boston.

The cities checked have Democratic mayors……
The previous mayor of Lexington was a Democrat so it will take time to clean up that shite.
The previous mayor of Jacksonville was a Democrat so it will take time to clean up that shite.

Only 62 murders this year for a population of 220,000ish
62 murders divided by 222,000 estimated people is 28.1 murder rate, which would put us 3rd on the list.

That’s as high or higher than Mexican cities that are ravaged by cartel wars. Holy hell.
Granted, their rates are materially undercounted as so many people just disappear and their bodies are never found.

bullshite.
Look at Birmingham and Richmond vs Memphis. Birmingham and RIC have small geo city limits w populations of around 220k, larger metro areas of 1.2M (same as New Orleans btw) and Memphis is much larger city population of 650k vs a 1.3m metro area.
A much better view of murder rate would include the corresponding metro areas of these cities. This would bring the murder averages of cities like Bham and Richmond down to the middle of the pack. But it wouldn't help New Orleans much.

New Orleans is an absolute wreck and they want to complain about other cities.
Figures.
Figures.

I was intrigued to see if there seemed to be any correlation between political party of the mayor of these cities and their place on the chart. I got to Washington before I gave up. Spoiler alert, every last one of them has a D mayor.
