I was on the third row when they came to the assembly center. I had a really good view. They were right there in front of me just 15 feet away. I remember being glad I wasn’t closer because they were slinging sweat all over.

The percussion guy played the most music of all of them. In fact, I think he played the most music but I don’t even know how to describe it. He had all his drums and bongos and electronic stuff and then behind him was two walls of all kind of crap to tap on and beat on. It was beyond amazing.

The Speak was before my time, but I remember that building. I have a specific memory of using the pay phone there when I was like 10

So it's time for my BTE story?

When I was at LSU in 1988 I went to the Chimes to see a band called The Fleshtones (their "hit" was a great remake of "Ride Your Pony").

The opening act was some band I'd never heard of called... Better Than Ezra. I thought they were great! REM-style power pop with a strong beat. I specifically recall liking a song called "Ezra Pound". After the show I kept telling people about them and wondering why they didn't have a record deal. A friend told me, "There are a bunch of REM imitators out there. Throw a stick in Athens and you hit a hundred of them."

Soon after I left La. and forgot about them. Cut to 1995. I'm watching Letterman when I hear, "And musical guest: Better than Ezra!". I nearly fell out of my chair. They'd changed their sound a bit -- classic REM had gone out of fashion - but at least they'd gotten that deal.

Yep, I saw REM at the Bayou when I was still at LSU in 81 or 82. The shite Dogs were still around back then. Great times on Chimes St.

I also saw the Violent Femmes at the VFW Hall on Choctaw I think in maybe 1985.

REM played that hole on Chimes,

You mean the Bayou, the greatest bar to ever exist around campus. I saw a lot of great bands there, REM, Flaming Lips , Dick Nixons , Lower Chakra, Shot Down Over Ecuador Jr......

My older brother and his friend took me with them to go see REM at the Bayou. They were in high school at the time and i believe they paid around $4 cover to get in. The “story” for our parents was that we were going to see a movie at the University Theater which is why i had to tag along. I was too young to get in (13) so they had me wait outside. I was fine with it because i was hanging out at a college. Then Murmur album came out months and they were like, “hey thats the band we saw”.

Herman's Hermits also played Murphys on their comeback tour in 81 or 82. My buddy jumped up on stage whilst they were playing. The bouncers dragged him off and started waling on him so we jumped in and it turned into a proper free for all.

Bet some people don't believe this. Not me. I won't get fooled again. They were out there in the field. It was teenage wasteland.

Yes, saw the Buckinghams there when I was a student at LSU. I had a date with a girl named Susan. It was kind of a drag until they played our song then finally she cared,
