re: There needs to be a 2 strike your out policy for DWI/DUI

The legal limit is ridiculously low and I have witnessed several people get a DUI because the police were camped outside of a bar. You can't blow because the limit is too low and your fricked if you've basically had anything. The field sobriety is essentially just an effort to acquire evidence
I compared two data points in one weekend in the late 90s. The city of Ruston arrested the same number of people (approx 20) for DUI as East Baton Rouge Parish did, in the same weekend. Population of 20k vs 200k (at the time.)
Doesn't seem suspicious at all.

quote:I appreciate the sentiment, but this is a dumb and unrealistic PC overreaction. Unless we are planning to outlaw alcohol altogether, it is too easy for otherwise good people to make a mistake one time - especially when young and inexperienced with drinking. I agree should be severe consequences for a 1st DUI to discourage repeat offenses, and there are. Do what you want to someone after their 2nd or 3rd DUI - that person is likely not salvageable. The number of lives destroyed by a "1 strike" policy leading to jail time or similar would outweigh the lives saved. It'd be like dropping the speed limit on the interstate to 45 mph - sure there'd definitely be a lot less deadly accidents and lives saved, but everyone would be miserable - so we don't do it. Not defending drunk driving, just being realistic.
1 strike

If you follow all the DWI posts on this board you know my stance as it relates to the “way overboard” some are as it relates to DWI’s. Having said that I’ve got a handful of friends that have gotten one or two and I can tell you the system is totally broken. It’s not about rehabilitation, it’s about funding the county. Counties would go broke if they threw people in jail for an extended period of time. 94% of all DWI’s are a standard arrest. No accidents involving others. 1% of all arrests result in either a fatal or trip to the hospital for the victim. I couldn’t find any stats on texting and driving, but I bet they are very close if not higher than the DWI numbers

I stand by 1 strike. I understand what you’re saying, but if after 1 strike you lose driving privileges forever, and we make that known to people that as a society getting behind the wheel of a car intoxicated will not be tolerated, it won’t happen at near the rate it does now.
Because people know that getting caught once won’t ruin their life is why they gamble with it.

Disagree. As long as you don’t kill or seriously hurt somebody it should be required rehab and your credit card, debit card, etc get declined if you try to purchase booze. Jail should be a last resort b/c too many of them are private and want nothing more than for you to be a repeat offender so you get frick all for reforming the person.

You don’t need a license to drive. It’s not like some drunk frick can’t just take keys and drive. Unless you are saying life in prison or some shite.

Just make self driving cars mandatory for everyone

Raise the limit.
SEVERELY punish people for poor driving no matter what the circumstances are(outside of medical issues that cause something to go wrong).
There’s no reason to punish me for driving home after 3 beers while letting idiots drive around Ike maniacs all the time, sober or not.
If I’m making the rules, you’re sitting in jail for a year the FIRST time you weave in and out of traffic at significant speed. No sense in it.
I’m also no punishing anyone for perfectly good driving if they’re not extremely drunk.

the penalty for being stopped for reckless driving or getting a DUI because you caused an accident should be different and more severe than if you blow .09 at a checkpoint.

Declining your cc for buying booze? God, some of you people are truly ignorant

It's a racket. It's bullshite. Freedom is scary. And sometimes deadly. But is never a good trade for safety.

People have no idea how many 3rd, 4th or 5ths get pled down to a 1st or a reckless driving. That's the problem when the offense is no longer in traffic court, but is sitting on a felony docket full of violent crimes.
Yep. If someone has 3 DWI's, they probably really have 6.

She didn’t have her seat belt on?
No excusing the DWI driver but always have your seat belt on

He’s also been charged with driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and driving with an open container of alcohol
What a piece of shite
The family already has enough to deal with and the fact that this shite stain didn’t have insurance so they’ll be out even more money and the hassle from that too .
Driving without insurance should be a much harsher penalty overall to deter it .

What is even more scary is how many times did he drive fricked up and just got lucky he didn’t kill someone.
Posted on 7/24/25 at 12:26 pm to dukke v
Why do people jump to such ridiculous conclusions about “lucky he didn’t kill someone”. For all the DWI’s issued in 2024 99.6% were non fatal. Obviously I don’t want anyone to die because of a drunk driver, but can we please shut the frick up about if you drive under the influence you’re going to kill 3 people and run over 5 dogs…

How the frick do we keep letting these frick sticks do this shite 3/4+ times until they hurt/kill someone. Shits ridiculous. I’m willing to let someone work through one mistake. You do the shite again your driving privileges need to be done and there probably needs to be mandated jail time.
There is mandatory jail. My alcoholic BIL got 4 or 5 and the last one put him in jail for about a 9 months. Last time I saw him he was mentioning about being sober for over 2 yrs now. I asked him what got him off the bottle he said the prospect of going to prison (Angola) for 10 yrs which is what his next step is…
So you cant tell me jail doesnt work.
