re: There can't be many things worse than standing in line to pay after euthanizing your dog

Having your dog put down at the vet should absolutely be free of charge if they were a lifelong patient of that vet
Making you pay to kill the dog is crazy imo

We took care of that prior. Your vet sucks.

I am guessing most vets offer it though
Quite the opposite. But they do have certain companies that specifically offer at home euthanasia.
Just like everything else, as costs increase, people become more litigious, and as corporate companies continue to buy out older vet offices, services like this are something most vet offices dont want to do.

My vet handles it by side door, process is in her office.

My vet told us to not stop at the desk, that we would settle up when we came for her ashes. They had a candle lit on the desk with a note explaining the significance and asking any customers to show respect and be silent. All the receptionists had left the area.

Last time I had to go through this, vet came out to my truck and we did it while I cried my eyes out holding her in the back. Still had to go in to pay but took the time to get my act together.
Of all the dogs that I've gone through this with she was the hardest. We've got three dogs now and this will be the last of them. My wife has early stage dementia and it's all falling down on me.

I honestly can't remember how I paid for our two, but I know it damn sure wasn't standing in line to swipe my fricking card.
The first, I just remember watching him go to sleep and I had to get out and to my car. Our GSD, they came to the house and administered it...took her away afterwards.

We had our dogs cremated thru the vet. We didn't want to leave them in that clay mud in a backyard in Houston. That way we take them with us.
They had our payment on record so no need to approach the front desk.

My vet(s) have always just sent me a bill.

I really need to switch to someone else. This thread is opening my eyes to the fact that it's not just me being overly critical of my vet's office, it's that they just fricking suck.

Seems mean but you wouldn’t believe how many people think the vet should provide them free pet care. Or deeply deeply discounted care. Everyone is used to a $20 copay for themselves and then assumes the vet is ripping them off.

That’s ruthless.
I had to put my dog down during the early days of covid when they wouldn’t let people in. They did let me in for the procedure. I walked back to my car, past the line of cars full of people waiting in the parking lot, weeping like an absolute bitch. I cried like a child. I couldn’t have stood in line.
They mailed me the bill later. I am thinking my vet mails the bill for that service to everyone.

Dogs dying are hard but that’s life. We’ve all gone through it and carried on. The shear number of dead dog posts by OTers looking for sympathy is astounding. When I had to put my dogs down, it sucked, but I didn’t feel the need to get sympathy online.
