Thefts of charging cables pose yet another obstacle to appeal of electric vehicles

DETROIT (AP) — Just before 2 a.m. on a chilly April night in Seattle, a Chevrolet Silverado pickup stopped at an electric vehicle charging station on the edge of a shopping center parking lot.
Two men, one with a light strapped to his head, got out. A security camera recorded them pulling out bolt cutters. One man snipped several charging cables; the other loaded them into the truck. In under 2½ minutes, they were gone.
The scene that night has become part of a troubling pattern across the country: Thieves have been targeting EV charging stations, intent on stealing the cables, which contain copper wiring. The price of copper is near a record high on global markets, which means criminals stand to collect rising sums of cash from selling the material.

I could see leftists twisting logic into wanting military protection for charging stations for national security purposes.

My workplace installed several charging stations for EVs in a prime parking area. You have to pay through an app to charge your car. At first, EV owners were attaching the cables to their cars but not activating the charger. Now, EV owners don’t even bother to fake that they are charging and park in the spots because they are close to the entrance to the office. The cables are left by the lazy and inconsiderate EV owners in tangled messes on the sidewalk as a tripping hazard to everyone who has to park further away. I wish someone would cut these cables.

Had a loaner EV Mercedes. Drives nice but hated going to these stations that took 1hour just to recharge 2/3 of the battery. Bought a hybrid instead getting great mpg and cut my gas budget in half.

Stories like this make me thankful for my gasoline powered car.

Still not sure why government is all in on EV and disregarding hybrid

Yep, I got a Hybrid in December, and my gas budget has dropped off the cliff. For sure, it's the way to go.

I do too and have separate chargers and batteries for them because I cant even weed eat my entire yard in one go. The blower i can, but barely.
I can cut my grass on less than one tank of gas with the zero turn though.

Plug in hybrids qualify for the same incentives as full battery EVs. They just don't incentivize the "hybrids" that have a 1.3kWh battery just to call it a hybrid.

Explosions from off gassing is pretty unappealing.

If they were pushing hybrids I might half believe them.

I’ll never buy or own an EV.

That to me is the way to go. I don’t see how the grid will be able to sustain adding more EVs and other electrical verses coal and gas. Not to mention lithium mining that has to be done and how it affects the environment.
All these data centers being build added to the grid are having their own units. Some point it will all fail miserably.

Maybe the chargers should give a nice jolt to the cable cutters... put that copper to good use

Elon is going to have tasers or something along those lines added to those stations eventually.
