With the world gearing up for the electric vehicle era, battery manufacturing has become a priority for many nations, including the United States.

However, having entered the race for batteries early, China is far and away in the lead.

Using the data and projections behind BloombergNEF’s lithium-ion supply chain rankings, this infographic visualizes battery manufacturing capacity by country in 2022 and 2027p, highlighting the extent of China’s battery dominance.

quote:

In 2022, China had more battery production capacity than the rest of the world combined.

Columns are:
Rank
Country
2022 Battery Cell Manufacturing Capacity, GWh
% of Total

#1 ???? China 893 77%
#2 ???? Poland 73 6%
#3 ???? U.S. 70 6%
#4 ???? Hungary 38 3%
#5 ???? Germany 31 3%
#6 ???? Sweden 16 1%
#7 ???? South Korea 15 1%
#8 ???? Japan 12 1%
#9 ???? France 6 1%
#10 ???? India 3 0.2%
?? Other 7 1%
Total 1,163 100%

With nearly 900 gigawatt-hours of manufacturing capacity or 77% of the global total, China is home to six of the world’s 10 biggest battery makers. Behind China’s battery dominance is its vertical integration across the rest of the EV supply chain, from mining the metals to producing the EVs. It’s also the largest EV market, accounting for 52% of global sales in 2021.

quote:

China’s well-established advantage is set to continue through 2027, with 69% of the world’s battery manufacturing capacity.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is projected to increase its capacity by more than 10-fold in the next five years. EV tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act are likely to incentivize battery manufacturing by rewarding EVs made with domestic materials. Alongside Ford and General Motors, Asian companies including Toyota, SK Innovation, and LG Energy Solution have all announced investments in U.S. battery manufacturing in recent months.

Europe will host six of the projected top 10 countries for battery production in 2027. Europe’s current and future battery plants come from a mix of domestic and foreign firms, including Germany’s Volkswagen, China’s CATL, and South Korea’s SK Innovation.

An interesting infographic and article from Visual Capitalist that displays where batteries are manufactured. I’m not 100% sure where the raw materials are mined, but that would be a very interesting deep dive I may go into later

Where is lithium available from?
With 8 million tons, Chile has the world’s largest known lithium reserves. This puts the South American country ahead of Australia (2.7 million tons), Argentina (2 million tons) and China (1 million tons). Within Europe, Portugal has smaller quantities of the valuable raw material. The total global reserves are estimated at 14 million tons. This corresponds to 165 times the production volume in 2018

Where is the most lithium mined?
With 51,000 tons, Australia was by far the most important supplier of lithium in 2018 – ahead of Chile (16,000 tons), China (8,000 tons) and Argentina (6,200 tons). This is shown by figures from the USGS (United States Geological Survey). The four countries mentioned have long dominated the picture, with Australia only gaining a clear lead over Chile in recent years.

Are all those Congolese kids really in Chili? What sort of conspiracy is this?

So, what you were saying is, we are already at peak battery in 2023.

The real headline here is that China is projected to lose market share to the US over the next 5 years.

tOT: Elon is a genius, perhaps the smartest person alive today.

Also tOT: Anyone pushing EVs and batteries is a retarded child slavery supporter.

Cobalt is one of the most imporant elements for batteries. It provides energy density and performance and is important for stability and safety. Without cobalt, there are no electric cars.

And cobalt is what is mined in the Congo by kids

The same Congo that the people on here call a shithole when it doesn’t suit their agenda?

Cat batteries aren’t 100% lithium. The child labor (and other forms of slavery) are for the rarer earth metals used in electric cars.

Hummm? That explains the push to EVs. Got to keep those battery plants running. That explains Joe and Hunter Biden's association with the ChiComs. Joe Biden's marching orders from his boss Xi Jinping? Destroy the U.S. Oil & Gas and the internal combustion auto industries. Make the Americans buy those expensive, inefficient EVs.

But before you do that, drain the SOR and ship the oil and our natural gas to China.

Then when the Republicans try to probe this Top Secret Document and O&G shipments to China debacle shut down their questions by telling them - can't respond because of an ongoing DOJ Investigation. Stall, stonewall, lie, and shield the 'Big Guy'.

A treacherous, treasonous, backstabbing bunch of these Biden people.

Not really considering that a decent portion of the battery materials can be recycled and reused

The largest EV company by far is a U.S. company

Five questions. Are you democrat? Do you own an internal combustion powered car? Do you own stock in car battery manufacturers? Are you chinese? What is your opinion of President Donald J. Trump?

It was obvious 20 years ago that China would become the world economic power, this is just another drop of water filling the glass.

Great plan to transition to an energy source that makes us dependent on China and other countries. Brilliant!
