I remember going through Boot Camp at age 26.....almost 10 years older than most of the other recruits.

I thought I was in good shape but those kids ran circles around me. I could not imagine dealing with that many kids as a 42 year old man. The physical fitness difference aside - - - zero in common and nothing to talk about. I'd be relating to them more as a father than an equal.

A 42 yr old E-1? Wow.....I suppose it is a good path for some, but I can't see it as an easy one

When Colonel Kurtz wanted to join Special Forces, it damn near killed him.

Now Mr. "I really regret not enlisting" has a chance to redeem himself.

damn I couldn't imagine how wrong my life would have to be going to enlist in my 40s
Usually that’s the case but you’d be surprised at some of the people you meet in the military and their motivations for joining. Slightly younger but there was a mid 30s guy in basic with me who was a commercial pilot. With 9/11 and everything going on in Iraq at the time, this dude just wanted to fight. So he went straight to infantry school.

I thought he was insane honestly.

What would be the incentive to join the army over 40? At that point you aren’t going to make use of the GI Bill. The pay sucks.

The only benefit I see is reduced health premiums thru the VA after you leave

Some people are lost in this world and have few options. Provides structure, stability, 3 hots and a cot, etc.

Imagine being a fry cook at McDonalds with no family at 40. Those types exist all over this country.

Me for 10 years: "Dang you know, I probably should have done some service"

My military buddies a couple of weeks before I turn 42: "LMAO GUESS WHAT"

I have so many questions about how a draft would impact us since we haven’t had one in so long?

Think about the pay cut many Americans would have to take. Idk if modern ameticans would be very happy about that. Would people be able to pay their mortgages off of Private First Class salary?

How would things run back home with men gone?

So many random thoughts.

Be pretty funny if all those boss girls who decided to never have children get drafted to kill brown people in the Middle East.

Serious answer.

Enlistment numbers are down and the possibility of needing physical boots on the ground is high.

They did it for the Iraq invasion in the early 2000s for the same reason.

AI is going take our jobs and the government is going to send us to war to conquer our nations rather than collecting UBI
