Nothing. Space itself is expanding.

Not necessarily smaller, it's just less crowded.

If they have someone like you posting on a message board, God help them. Maybe it's an alternate opposite reality and that guy does great weather predictions.

Just further illustrates science in this realm is still evolving as we go. That's a pretty big miss though.

Expanding into what?

I've heard the analogy about the balloon being blown up, but that still doesn't explain the space that anything is expanding into.

Because while nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, space itself can expand faster than the speed of light. So the more space between us and a distant object, the faster it's expanding away from us. At some point in the very far future, everything will be moving away faster than the speed of light, all light that was close enough to reach us will have reached us, and the night sky will be completely black.

quote:

Either way, there's a critical distance where the apparent recession speed of a galaxy will exceed the speed of light: around a distance of 13-to-15 billion light-years. Beyond that, galaxies appear to recede faster than light, but this isn't due to an actual superluminal motion, but rather to the fact that space itself is expanding, which causes the light from distant objects to redshift.

maybe nothing, maybe infinitely more galaxies, but it doesn't really matter because we can't see to tell

Can't be nothing. Space has to have something in which to expand.
