Life.
All life is pretty much a ruthless competition for survival and advantage. From plants to once celled organisms and up. The ole "nature red in tooth and nail" paradigm.
That said, for me, the world is still a wonderful place if you can learn to enjoy its blessings. Face a terminal disease and you soon learn to enjoy all the little things and the the things that make a lot of people complain no longer holds sway over you.

You’re right about selfishness being the root of many problems with humanity. But this “moral decline” false nostalgia bullshite is both ignorant and played-out.
By every measure imaginable, we’re safer and more comfortable than humans have ever been. And more of our neighbors are treated with dignity than ever before. If anyone is holding us back from getting even better it’s the bigoted conservatives that refuse to accept that we have all kinds and it takes all kinds.
