I'm hoping American does the same to Charlotte and gives the business to those North Carolina losers.

There's no reason for American to have hubs in Miami, Charlotte, Reagan, Philly, JFK, and LaGuardia post merger.

With all the big banks in Charlotte, I doubt they'll leave

AA is a dirty company, they will frick any and every airport they can.

St Louis and Pittsburgh can vouch for that.

Who was in Kansas City? TWA?

Charlotte is probably safe.

That's crazy considering what Memphis offers from a business and tourism/attraction standpoint:

FedEx
St. Jude
International Paper
Memphis Grizzlies
Music and BBQ
Civil Rights Museum
Graceland

I used to fly through Memphis all the time in the 2000's. That airport was popping back then.

This. And my gate would always be 2 miles away.

I fly there from HOU when I go to NE Arkansas for work and it's always empty. Had a flight out last Thursday @ 8:00 and there were 3 other people in the security line.

It's a paradigm shift for sure.
Many smaller airlines are adopting its model because they don't have to overcome the barriers to entry to competing in the spoke and hub world.
Plus... its WAAAYYYY more profitable. You're even seeing the big boys implement some of its features.

You're going to continue to see the older generation prefer and pay for the convenience of S&H.
However, even that appeal is being challenged when someone has the direct flight option.

I hope more airlines continue to follow how Southwest does things. They are easily the best airline to fly with in the US.

Charlotte is by far the lowest cost per passenger hub in the AA system. They're not shutting it down.

The first 3 might garner a fair amount of business travel or for medical reasons but I don't know many people that vacation in Memphis

Yeah Pittsburgh was dead last time I flew there. That airport needs updating real bad.

Graceland is supposed to be the most visited house in the country after the White House.

What is the Southwest model compared to the rest?

Delta rekt Memphis. But Memphis deserved it. Their gate fees and taxes made their fares incredibly higher compared to the other airports around them.

Yep. I lived in Memphis for a few years, lived 20 minutes from the airport and would drive to Nashville to fly out because it was soooooo much cheaper. Even with gas and parking it still cost 40% less than flying from Memphis. I remember seeing it was one of the top 2 or 3 most expensive large airports to fly from in the country.

It was a fortress hub with Delta controlling the overwhelming majority of the gates and O-D traffic (and keeping SWA out) until 2014 or so.

They overcharged. But ticket prices are more reasonable today with the increased competition.

They did that in Cincy for a while too.

Lots of information out there for you to research on your own. But, it can essentially be condensed into two points.

Better business model
Better customer service

They have less overhead by flying point to point vs using a main hub (like Houston/Atlanta/Denver/etc).
They also provide a better experience despite being cheaper.

They return a 17% profit vs the industry average of 11%. 50% better than your competition is incredible.

Shittttt does this mean I’ll have to start waiting in line for security?

I’m so used to there being less than 5 people in line at security that I almost missed my flight the other morning because it took 30 minutes to get through security and I had banked on walking right through.

I have never found Southwest to have better customer service than Delta. It stomps all over United and American though.

I like their point to point model and reduced (although not eliminated) reliance on the hub and spoke model. Part of that was out of necessity.

ETA: Delta eliminating consolidating hubs into Atlanta and thus reducing connection options in the south kind of pisses me off.

Then again, Southwest doesn’t go to some airports in mid market cities, which is pretty inconvenient too. They were not in Memphis (1.5 million metro) until 2013 or so. I wish they’d expand more aggressively.
