quote:

Memphis used to be a regular transfer stop for business and leisure travelers, when Northwest Airlines was the dominant carrier and the airport was marketed as a “hassle-free” hub. But then Delta Air Lines gobbled up Northwest, and decided it only needed one hub in the South, its own base in Atlanta. The decision cost Memphis almost two-thirds of its passengers: From more than 11 million in 2007, the last full year before the merger announcement, the count fell to about four million last year.

quote:

That has sometimes left the spacious three-concourse terminal looking staggeringly deserted, with most of its gates unused. The airport’s solution is to spend $219 million on what it is calling a modernization effort: closing and renovating Concourse B, and then consolidating operations there and essentially mothballing Concourses A and C. The plan is as much a push toward the future as it is an admission that Memphis — the sign at the entrance still calls it “America’s Aerotropolis” — is a lesser passenger magnet these days than Omaha or Columbus, Ohio, or even the second airport serving Dallas.

quote:

In Memphis, there are direct flights to far fewer destinations than before, and only two to help justify the “international” in the name (Toronto and Cancún, Mexico). It takes no time at all to walk through the terminal’s three ticketing areas or to zip through the security line. A gate may be crowded when a flight is about to board, but others nearby will be idle, and finding a place to sit is rarely a problem.

This is fairly true the last time I had a connection there. Nothing like the old Northwest days.

Delta rekt Memphis. But Memphis deserved it. Their gate fees and taxes made their fares incredibly higher compared to the other airports around them.

I used to fly through Memphis all the time in the 2000's. That airport was popping back then.

Sad to hear

Who's funding this boondoggle?

FedEx ought to take over a concourse just for themselves.

Met my wife in a Memphis airport bar. When you have game, you don't need crowds.

Memphis fell victim to Delta's acquisition and consolidation and its spoke and hub model.
Spoke and Hub will continue to lose ground to the more economical models of PTP.

However, Memphis is suffering by not being a prime PTP location because it isn't a major travel destination like other cities in its geographic region.

I'm hoping American does the same to Charlotte and gives the business to those North Carolina losers.

There's no reason for American to have hubs in Miami, Charlotte, Reagan, Philly, JFK, and LaGuardia post merger.

I was running late for a flight out of Memphis a couple weeks ago to be surprised that there was not a single line anywhere. I got to my plane in about 5 minutes from the curb. It was pretty badass.

American Airlines did the same to Lambert in St>louis. Made a shite load of promises, lied about all kinds of shite, then left the airport hangin.

Southwest has come in and taken over a lot of gates, and been good to the airport. AA is a dirty company, they will frick any and every airport they can.

They are consolidating all the gates into Terminal B after the renovation. Should be nice when done.

You can pour your own drinks in the Memphis Delta lounge.

Delta needs another hub in or very close to Texas IMO.

No real mystery

It's a hub located in a regional city with little national appeal

It's a paradigm shift for sure.
Many smaller airlines are adopting its model because they don't have to overcome the barriers to entry to competing in the spoke and hub world.
Plus... its WAAAYYYY more profitable. You're even seeing the big boys implement some of its features.

You're going to continue to see the older generation prefer and pay for the convenience of S&H.
However, even that appeal is being challenged when someone has the direct flight option.

US Airways killed Pittsburgh. Then AA gave them the death blow.
