Some dude applied baseball's famed Moneyball principles to over 6,000 generals throughout history and came up with ten generals who were better than all the rest. The YouTube video is linked below but I shall go ahead and reveal the list for those of you who don't want to watch it:

10. Alexander the Great, Macedonia
09. Georgy Zhukov, USSR
08. Frederick the Great, Prussia
07. Ulysses S. Grant, USA
06. Hannibal Barca, Carthage
05. Khalid Ibn Al-Walid, Rashidun Caliphate
04. Takeda Shingen, Japan
03. Arthur Wellesley - 1st Duke of Wellington, Great Britain
02. Julius Caesar, Rome
01. Napoleon Bonaparte, France

Not even the greatest general in the Civil War. Stonewall Jackson and his strategies are still being studied at West Point. His death was probably the biggest reason the Union won the war.

Grant was not a good general
He was a drunk
But he was a drunk who recognized he had a massive logistical advantage and pounded a far inferior opponent into submission

Washington, Andrew Jackson and Winfield Scott are the greatest American generals

Zhukov is vastly overrated. He simply used mass to bludgeon the Nazis. Very little as far as tactics go.

No Ghengis Khan? And what about Hindenburg/Ludendorff, If Germany had them in WW2 commanding that superior force it would’ve been even messier then it was. I’d probably move Zhukov way up, he played the Germans after Stalingrad when he had them on the run, pure mastery although it didn’t hurt that he had way more people and wasn’t afraid to throw them at the enemy recklessly.

Caesar was amazing, he defeated other awesome Roman generals commanding other badass Roman legions so the fact that he was never beaten just shows how great he was. Caesar like everyone else though idolized Alexander and there’s no doubt he was the greatest of the ancients, he also died extremely young so his legend is even greater considering what he could’ve gone on to do.

Khan
Alexander
Caesar

Grants greatest gift was realizing his supply chain, resource and manpower advantage. One could say that makes him a great general because of the failures before his assignment but he wasn’t a tactical genius
