Any short list of great generals should include Sala ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub.

Can Charlemagne get some love in here.
Also he may not quite fit the description but Baton Rouge’s own El Cid was the GOAT fighter/leader of men in war.

Grant was blessed by superior logistics and manpower. Even Vicksburg his most touted campaign starts to diminish when you consider he tried a couple of stupid attempts to attack Vicksburg from the north directly that fail, until he "learns" and comes up with a decent strategy. And he is impatient and wastes lives in direct assaults on Vicksburg which are failures.

He was correct. Churchill had a similar plan.
Both were visionaries that saw the terrible future the USSR and global communist expansion efforts represented in the post-war world.
Unfortunately, Patton was killed and Churchill was ousted.

09. Georgy Zhukov, USSR (Overrated - Had a bunch of Generals under him who carried him)
08. Frederick the Great, Prussia (Fair but even Frederick acknowledged the "Miracles of the House of Brandenburg)
07. Ulysses S. Grant, USA (Overrated- Posters have already posted how not even the best General in the Union Army)
06. Hannibal Barca, Carthage (Fair)
05. Khalid Ibn Al-Walid, Rashidun Caliphate (Maybe Fair but not super knowledgable on this)
04. Takeda Shingen, Japan (Fair: but not super knowledgable on this)

Also worthy, although it always seems odd to me when Hannibal is ranked high but Scipio Africanus is not mentioned.
In the usual lists, it’s Alexander as #1. Subutai deserves ranking. Napoleon is highly regarded but he did lose, after all. I always think Belisarius deserves mention.

Patton and Rommel are the same coin, different sides. Good tacticians, lousy strategists, horrid at logistics.

This was done in the days before telecommunications, so every single order he sent out had to be delivered by courier, train, or the telegraph. Grant was coordinating the entire Union war effort from the field while, at the same time, was directly supervising the Army of the Potomac's fight against Robert E. Lee.
People who say Grant is overrated have no idea what they are talking about. All Lee had to do was defend Virginia, all Sherman had to do was attack Atlanta, Grant had to direct an entire war while, at the same time, fight the South's best commander.

I agree with all of this, not enough attention is given to winning the peace as well as winning the war. Or winning without fighting.
I'm inclined to put Octavius Augustus as well as Alexander the Great as number One. I like Steppe generals like Subtai, but I have to give points to advancing Civilization.
