According to this study, top 5% pay over 50% of total federal income tax. Your point on TOTAL tax is an interesting one.

I dunno. As long as idiot and/or lazy children and grandchildren of all but the extreme super wealthy can still, within a generation of two, blow through the fortune one exceptional father/grandfather amassed, I think things are still not too far gone.

The 1%, 10%, 20%, etc are not flesh and blood people.

The average american moves around income groups over the span of their lifetime.

So, the people who made up the 1% in 1989 do not make up the 1% in 2017.

As thomas sowell, a man who is much smarter than everyone on here says:
quote:

Currently we are hearing a lot in the media and in politics about the "top one percent" of income earners who are supposedly getting an ever-increasing share of the nation's income.

That is absolutely true if you are talking about income brackets. It is totally untrue if you are talking about actual flesh and blood people.

The Internal Revenue Service can follow individual people over the years because they can identify individuals from their Social Security numbers. During recent years, when "the top one percent" as an income category has been getting a growing share of the nation's income, IRS data show that actual flesh and blood people who were in the top one percent in 1996 had their incomes go down — repeat, DOWN — by a whopping 26 percent by 2005.

How can both sets of statistics be true at the same time? Because most people who are in the top one percent in a given year do not stay in that bracket over the years.

If we are being serious — as distinguished from being political — then our concern should be with what is happening to actual flesh and blood human beings, not what is happening to abstract income brackets.

They're democratic socialist with no diversity and very little net impact on the world

It's a shite comparison

But if you want to reduce the US to like 20 million people who are 98% white and eliminate the military and most cutting edge tech/science/health spending, we could probably make socialism work here too

The 80s and 90s were some of the 2 BEST DECADES EVER when it came to economic advancement and prosperity for the ordinary American.

This idea that the average american has seen no economic benefits over the past few decades is so ridiculous that I don't even give it more than a minute of respect

A poor person in American has, in their pocket, a device that has access to all information the world has ever known. Literally at the touch of their fingers they have access to it

This is the greatest time EVER to be a human.

You can largely thank low interest rates and the after-shocks of QE for that.

And real estate churning and churning and churning driven, in part, by foreign buyers putting safe cash in American real estate.

Our median worker pay is also much higher than pretty much every country on that list sans maybe Switzerland, especially PPP adjusted. Needs a little more context, in other words.

This thread also proves the average American doesn't know the difference between income and wealth.

I'd imagine the top 1% of wealth doesn't move very much at all.

The top 10% of income had a median family income of $260k and a median net worth of $1.64MM. Meanwhile, the top 10% of net worth had a median family income of $215k but a median net worth of $2.39MM.

That shouldn't come as a surprise, after all, income =/= wealth.

I wonder how many people in the bottom 50% made 10% on their investment portfolios in 2016?

It's not really a surprise that the gap continues to widen.

Plus, with wage stagnation, it's not just the poor that are stuck anymore.

Middle class isn't what it used to be.

Just saying, in the right situation, it works. Not saying that it would work here.

The people I'm referring to all do their parts and they don't have the freeloader issues that we do.
