The story about anesthesia insurance coverage is a lot more complicated than it looks

Advocates against surprise-billing had been targeting bcbs to adopt Medicare rules for anesthesia: aka cap the amount that can be billed. Medicare, Medicaid, and many other insurance firms restrict the amount of time that anesthesiologists can bill to insurance, as studies have found that they are the number 1 culprit behind surprise billing.
The anesthesiologist association used yesterday’s news cycle to get their way and have bcbs reverse the change.
Community notes- which is twitter’s fact checking service, is now posting this under every post that shares the story:
The head of “Americans against surprise billing” is pissed off

Tl/dr: bcbs was working with surprise billing reformers to put tighter (Medicare-style) regulations on anesthesiologists. Populists misunderstood the regulation, stirred up rage, and killed the reform. Now surprise-billing reformers are pissed off

I’d rather wake up to a surprise bill than in the middle of open heart surgery, honestly.

Average salary for anesthesiologist in America: 403,000/year

you will need a heart doctor after you see the surprise bill

Medicare, Medicaid, and many major private insurers have been regulating anesthesia time for years, and there is no evidence that people covered under these plans are given inadequate anesthesia

I'd venture to guess that there is a 0.000000000000000000% chance of this happening because of this change by BCBS. They are simply adopting basically the same rules that Medicare has, and people aren't waking up from their open heart surgeries... or any other surgeries... that are covered by Medicare.

When my toddler had tubes put in his ears, the anesthesiologist administered laughing gas, once. Billed twice, because it was two ears. I reported this to my ins co for overbilling, the ins co said no, this is fine.
ETA- it was $750 per ear. Just for the anesthesiologist. To administer laughing gas.

Another healthcare analyst is likewise pissed off at populists for killing the bcbs reform

What does this have to do with anything?

HHTM is obviously mad because people who are more educated than him make substantially more money than he does...

I don’t want single payer. I want government completely fricking out of medical care all together.

If they would still work for $300k/yr, for example, who other than the companies that are effectively paying their salary would be in a position to leverage them down and save the consumer unnecessarily high premiums?

so you'd prefer to pay premiums that create billions of dollars of profits to an insurance company than to pay an actual medical care provider what the market deems is an appropriate salary?

surprise billing.
Something in a hospital that is 6X the amount it should be, but between Medicare and Medicaid it doesn’t matter because the government that oversees those programs also take care of the world with our taxpayer money. The same government that will spend $1000 on something that could be picked up at Ace Hardware for $20. Maybe government waste is the problem.

The provider salaries/costs are what drives the insurance costs. It's not a one-way street.

Now do the insurance companies.
Anesthesiologist salaries have nothing to do with this policy.

Yes, they do. Insurance #1 expense is paying the medical providers. #1 expense.
