I feed Diamond Naturals Beef & Rice and Victor Beef & Rice. Each are about $50 for 40 lbs. Thats my price point bc I have 5 large dogs and go through 40 lbs per week. I supplement by adding a tbs of Iams canned, and l, occasionally, other healthy human food treats. Hopefully these don’t skyrocket. The “better brands” aren’t really better and are $$$. Purina Pro Plan went up to about $79 and it’s crap. Once in a while, a rescue I foster for will give me a bag of Pet Smart Authority. That’s Pet Smart brand and it’s higher than what I feed! Or close enough to it, being a store brand, it’s a ridiculous cost.
People are surrendering and dumping their pets daily. Being a part of a couple of rescues, it’s horrible, and the worst I’ve ever seen. Pet food and basic preventatives / vacc should be reasonable cost, leaving the pricey stuff for sick pets, but you can’t get out under $300 for a yearly exam and vacc these days. A lower income person can indeed offer a fantastic loving home, but the costs today prevent it.

Seeing this constantly on a local FB group.

And those brands are pushed due to diet induced canine DCM. I’m watching and reading on it, but to me, those brands are crap, and are behind the outcry.

This is true. The stray we took in has cost us $800 in the six weeks we have had her for shots, check up, follow up, worm treatment, heartworm meds, and a fix on a foot problem. And of course our food bill has doubled.

Yep. I got out of many of those. Couldn’t take it. Even the shelters are full and can’t take in, and are killing, even when they haven’t done so in the past.
Right now, there is a large stunning male German shepherd in Oberlin hell hole “pound” I’d go get in a heartbeat. But I’m at my personal limit and just can’t. He’s gonna die real soon. The rescues I help are full and even cross country where I network, as well, are full.

Dog food. $50 billion dollar a year racket. Corn for the main ingredients and rotten beef, chicken and turkey meat.

I use the natural balance and wellness brands and have had pretty good results with them.

It's all bs. Just feed them the cheap stuff.
The vet told me the main difference in cheap and expensive is the amount of fillers used. The cheap stuff just makes your dog poop more.

It's all bs. Just feed them the cheap stuff. You aren't keeping them alive any longer. If you have a purebred, which is why most people buy designer food, they aren't going to be around that long anyway and will end up having a number of ailments, regardless of what you feed them. It's all a big scam.
You probably have a shitty diet for yourself too.

Or digestive issues, or skin issues, etc.

Dog shite takes days to dry now. Remember years ago the shite would turn white with in a few hours. It was due to high calcium and higher meat content in the foods. Feed you dogs table scraps and ice cream once a week.

And they cause more food allergies. Also noticed the coat gets softer on the high protein stuff.
Another thing about the cheap crap. It attracts flies in the yard

22% of pet owners indicated having applied to special services in their state that help pet owners pay for pet-related costs, while 73% of pet owners felt a food pantry for pets would be helpful to them.
Change pet to child and the ratio would be reversed

I have 8 dogs and completely agree with you. If you can't afford them, don't own them. A pet food pantry? Bitch please.
