I guess there was a time in America after 9/11 some could go the same route against Muslims, but I doubt we could ever reach that German level of cruelty.

I am speaking to everyone on this thread.
As an old Boomer, WWII Collector, Small Private Museum Curator and historian I am going to give my thoughts and I am ready for the downvotes to fly.

Remember the old saying about History repeats itself? and those refusing to teach history are doomed to repeat it?

You wonder how an advanced, cultured and civilized a society like Germany was in 1933, could do such a thing?

If you remember Dachau was the first concentration camp and it was used in the beginning for the removal of POLITICAL prisoners.. Not Jews. In fact.. Some Jewish People actually voted FOR Hitler.

The Nazi's catalyst was to blame the Jews for everything wrong with their country.

Now let's take a look at the USA today and view what similarities there are going on now as in Germany in 1933.

You are hearing this statement more and more:
The problems with this country are because of WHITE PEOPLE.
They are wanting to remove Old Glory.
Democratic candidates were proposing that MAGA voters be placed in re-education camps.
The Borders are open to assist with White People becoming a minority.
Our schools are dropping their standards more and more and being taught more political information than math and science.
Hitler arrested his political opponents, and so did Joe Biden.
The Media/Hollywood/Music is taken over by leftist and democrat leaning people.
Germans told their people not to shop at Jewish stores. BLM told people not to shop at White owned stores for Christmas.

Bottom line... If people in this country don't wake up, I honestly feel that one day we will wake up and White People will be in concentration camps. and our Next Civil war will be Racial.\\

THis is not a White Supremacy thought, or anything to promote such a thing as White Supremacy because there is nothing wrong with people of color.

But it is my view that the Democratic Party is becoming more and more aligned with Nazi Politics and theory than ever before and we are in the beginning stages of that.

I promise you that witin the next 20 years, there is a movement to replace the US Flag. And the sounds of America was never great are getting louder and louder. You couldn't even put a Betsy Ross Flag on a shoe.

In Charlie Chaplin's Movie The Dictator. there is a scene where the SA are coming for the Jews and a woman says: "Why doesn't somebody do something?" Maybe it's because everybody was sitting around watching football and said: "Ah, it's never gonna happen here."

I’m actually surprised personal cameras are allowed in. Also, when millineals visit historic destruction….

And that wasn't even Hitler's "idea"

Himmler basically wrote a vaguely worded letter to Reinhard Heydrich who took it as permission to start killing them by the score.

Poor Hitler. So misunderstood.

I have looked for books on this topic but they always trend towards the denial side.

It's been repeated many, many times, that the German state was fastidious with record keeping. They didn't tattoo the ones that went straight from the trains to the gas chambers. Ones that were tattooed and eventually killed (through neglect or execution) often worked in the camps for years, or as long as they survived.

All "death camps" were peculiarly liberated by the Soviet Army

It’s not peculiar if you’ve ever looked at a map of Europe and where the camps were located.

Aaron smells it, strong, chokingly strong, the disinfectant smell, but far more powerful. It is coming from the iron pillar. The first whiff burns, stabbing into his lungs like a red-hot sword, shooting alarm through his frame, racking him with cramps. He tries in vain to shrink away from the pillar. All is howling chaos and terror in the dark. He gasps out a deathbed confession, or tries to, with congesting lungs, swelling mouth tissues, in breath-stopping pain: “The Lord is God. Blessed be His name for ever and ever. Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is One God.” He falls to the cement. Writhing bodies pile on top of him, for he is one of the first adults to go down. He falls on his back, striking his head hard. Naked flesh presses on his face and all over him, stilling his contortions. He cannot move. He does not die of the gas. Very little enters his system. He goes almost at once, the life smothered out of him by the weight of dying Jews. Call it a blessing, for death by the gas can take a long time. The Germans allow a half hour for the process.

When the men in stripes pull apart the tangled dead mass, the sea of stiff human nakedness, and uncover him, his face is less contorted than others, though nobody notices one old thin dead body among thousands. Jastrow is dragged by a rubber-gloved Sonderkommando to a table in a mortuary where his gold-filled teeth are ripped out with pliers and dropped in a pail. This process goes on wholesale all over the mortuary, with the search of orifices and the cutting off of the women’s hair. He is then loaded on a hoist which is lifting bodies in assembly-line fashion to a hot room where a crowd of Sonderkommandos is busily at work at a row of furnaces. His body on an iron cradle, with two children’s bodies piled on top of him because he is so small, goes into an oven. The iron door with a glass peephole slams shut. The bodies rapidly swell and burst, and the flames burn the fragments like coal. Not until the next day are his ashes carted to the Vistula in a big truck loaded with human ash and bone fragments, and dumped into the river.

So the dissolved atoms of Aaron Jastrow float past the river banks of Medzice where he played as a boy, and float all the way through Poland, past Warsaw to the Baltic Sea. The diamonds he swallowed on the walk to the crematorium may have burned up, for diamonds burn. Or they may lie on the river bed of the Vistula. They were the finest stones, saved for an ultimate extremity, and he had meant to slip them to Natalie on the train. Their sudden parting prevented that, but the Germans never got them.

Ever since reading Winds of War and War and Remembrance for the first time, I always think about how Wouk wrote about the death of Aaron Jastrow when I think of Auschwitz. After hundreds of pages and years (in the books) of avoiding the Nazis, the character's fortune changes and he's gone in moments.

It's my firm belief that every human needs to experience Dachau/Auschwitz and the Sistene Chapel

Experiencing humanity at its greatest and absolute worst allows for perspective

Workers were housed and fed (barely). Auschwitz had a sign: Arbeit macht frei which means work sets you free. The exterminations took place when they couldn't house anymore or when workers could not work. Hair was cut and shipped to processing centers and turned into socks and other items.

This was the US Marines first taste of the Japanese brutality they would face. I’ve heard of the Goettge patrol, but historian Dave Holland lays out exactly what the Marines found.

Japan was brutal and would have fought to the death

the race for the atomic bomb became the only equalizer
Imagine what Germany or Japan would have done had they got hold of it first.

I forgot how many more millions of Jews were killed under Stalin.

The only thing my grandmother would say about the war (she lived in Eastern Europe) was, "The difference between Nazi and Soviet occupation? The Nazis would quietly march you behind the building to get executed, so that noone in town had to acknowledge it. The Soviets would parade you to the town square and force all the villagers to watch."

That was the last cavalry charge of the US Army. Ordered by Douglass MacArthur, and led by George Patton.

Prior to the Russian infantry moving in, what did Russian intel think of this complex?

You know aerial flights were taken over Auschwitz. They saw trains rolling in and out. They had to know the camp was a large complex and had some significance.
