I haven't spoken to her in a very long time, but she did extremely well in school and was level headed and perfectly normal.

just going by what it says on the bottom of the article. Left to right - president of NCAA 1st, followed by April Tasker (name released by news, age 21) this article is 3 years old and talking about scholarships... would have been 18 at the time

Well if she had just parked her car on the interstate to pick flowers, I can see where the "darwinism" comment might apply.

I've had somebody jump out of my car as I was pulling over to help an animal that somebody else hit... She almost got hit, herself. Focused on the wrong thing at the wrong time. Completely plausible.
ETA:
I basically had to gun the car forward a couple inches and bump her to smack her back to her senses.
