very fair assessment but the success of latin america kids in baseball is not because of a lesser dedication to the craft.

Hmmm....says here that the US is responsible for 70% of all MLB players.

Which Countries Produced The Most MLB Players In 2025?

t’s crazy and I know it’s crazy, but here we are. To her credit, my wife also knows it’s crazy but is still struggling with the “what if she misses out?” aspect of it all.

She will miss out. No matter what decision you make, she will miss out on something. If you decide not to have her do competitive dance, she will miss out on those experiences. If she dies do it, she will miss out on other opportunities not related to her dance team. Life is a series of trade-offs. Every day we make decisions. Every decision has multiple paths, and when we go down a path, we never get to know “what if” we had chosen differently. We may in the future choose that other thing, but the experience will be different. To me the question isn’t what if she misses out on something, it’s “what is more ok for her to miss out on?”

Holding your kid back in school for sports reasons is nuts.

Yeah, that’s also true. This is just our first experience with it. I was at the tail end of the last generation that didn’t have the travel ball culture. It was around but it wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is today.

Doesn’t help that the chicks that run this dance studio also run the high school dance team which is legitimately good. I doubt they’re making decisions on which 6 year olds join the travel team, but she will get better if she joins and will put in her hours towards the 10,000 hour rule.

Those Dominican kids are going through training programs that would make the travel ball kids here blush. There's a reason the MLB has academies set up down there. Despite what you may see on IG reels, those kids are not making to the MLB playing stick ball in a dirt street. The MLB realized long ago that getting into those communities and providing legit facilities with legit training as a "way out of poverty" would pay off dividends. The kids in those academies eat, breathe, and sleep baseball.

I mean… that sounds genuinely healthier for a kid’s development than micromanaging every aspect of their “career” at 9 years old. By kind of a lot.

I have been out of the youth sports world for a long time so i am out the loop. Are other sports just more cut and dry: you sooner realize you aren’t very good and just move on? With baseball do you keep pursing this false hope by jumping around to different travel teams and paying for hitting coaches? Do the mental gymnastics end quicker for football and basketball?
it is a cancer in every youth competive endeavor from cheer to wrestling. It's getting worse every year.

Sure but those kids aren’t paying a dime for it and they’re not traveling hundreds of miles every week to go play. And most importantly aren’t being raised by white trash.

Academies and travel ball are different. Academies help develop players. The guy running the travel Ball league couldn’t care less about development, all he wants is your check.

I'm embarrassed to even mention what we paid for AAU this year. So I won't. All I know is that we've finally hit the financial point where it obviously isn't worth it and we'll be looking for other options next season..

Caught me sleeping. Fool me once. BTW it's the same story for baseball, cheer, dance, volleyball. Know when to say when. There's always somebody that will take your money.
