I know this has been discussed before but I felt with the anniversary today, it was timely. Long but worth it.

TL;DR Rick Rescorla was the head of security at the WTC offices of Morgan Stanley and basically predicted that the complex would be attacked again. His efforts to drill MS employees saved over 2,700 lives that day (only 13 died, including him and his staff).

Rick was also a mega badass (fought communists by joining both the British and Rhodesian armies before immigrating to the US to fight in Vietnam).

I've seen some short form videos about Rescorla.

I think it was fortunate for Morgan Stanley that they were immediately below the impact zone.

However, Rescorla's efforts to prepare them in the wake of 1993 attack certainly set them up for the notably high success rate on 9/11.

Amen and amen

Absolutely. Meanwhile, Marsh McLennan (North Tower) and Fuji Bank (South Tower) had the misfortune to have their offices directly in the impact zones.

One other company in the North Tower (Carr Futures on the 92nd floor) lost its entire staff that went in that day even though they were also below the impact zone, the collapse of floors and walls blocked their access to the stairwells and they were trapped.

Rick was an incredible person. True warrior to the core as well.

His life story is what movies should be.

It should be a bigger scandal that they were told to stay put. Rescorla ignoring that and evacuating his people anyway, all the way to his making the ultimate sacrifice to do so is the stuff of legend.

In fairness, the Port Authority had no idea that a second plane was heading their way and wanted to keep the area around the North Tower clear for first responders.

Rick Rescorla photo was used on the cover of the book, We were Soldiers Once and Young. He was an infantry officer in Lt Col Moore's infantry battalion. A very brave man and a great American hero.

I was actually coming here to make this same thread. Of all the heroes on that day, Rick Rescorla was the biggest. He should be a household name, but he isn’t. May this absolute hero Rest in Peace.

yeah, the mindset was very much still pre 9/11 (obviously). no one on the ground in the towers or at the port authority thought bin laden was hijacking and intentionally flying planes into buildings that morning. you can't blame these people for the failures of our intelligence community imo

In the CBS 9/11 doc from 2002, Joe Pfeifer (FDNY Battalion Chief) was heard stating "it looked like a direct attack."

Damn. That British/Rhodesian/US army trifecta has to be incredibly rare.

Wow I have somehow never heard of this man until right now

This is crazy. He absolutely saved those people. Bet the executives that bitched about quarterly safety drills sure were happy they made it out after it was all over with

People like Rick, they don’t die old men. They aren’t destined for that and it isn’t right for them to do so. It just isn’t right, by God, for them to become feeble, old, and helpless sons of bitches. There are certain men born in this world, and they’re supposed to die setting an example for the rest of the weak bastards we’re surrounded with.”

Inspiring story and this paragraph sums up who he was.

Also, here’s Rescorla being interviewed in 1998, where he’s talking about his time in Vietnam as well as the dangers of American interventionism which could lead to attacks at home.
