You actually think this is the first time someone tried to build in the soils in the New Orleans area?

All underground piping in these areas has an engineered hanger assembly system required to attach to the building slab. With the slab being pile supported so the soil doesnt even support he slab. withing a few years, there will be pockets under the building with no soil. and is simply sinks away. some project doent even back fill the foundation with soil, but use foam blocks instead.

A literal “Oh shite!” moment.

The New Orleans Aviation Board would fit nicely culturally into the Chicago political landscape.

We have been sending information to the news media for months on the airport. The access road is still not complete, but WDSU and the Advocate report that it was completed for the mid May scheduled opening date. … You can not open an airport without an access road. Today WWL reported the 6-8 inches of sinking and still sewer line problems.... We told the City Council in April that we had received 2 messages from reliable sources that there was sinking. At the May council meeting the airport staff stated those reports were false.

WDSU February Report

So they weren't allowed in?

Not saying the project isn't some form of cluster, but the rumors and 'insider info' on this project has been laughable at times.

That's how they pour concrete in NOLA. The rebar helps catch the crumbling, unreinforced concrete so you won't notice the real problem for years.

There was a really horrible movie made in New Orleans named On Hostile Ground.

https://youtu.be/RtKpKJKy1Sw?t=4430

There was a giant sinkhole hundreds of feet deep under the city and they sprayed a crapload of stuff like this to fill it in. We just need a big arse can.

Of course there is some expense to cutting over 100 holes with diamond blades and then repouring slab.

But the ones that "value engineered it out" can/will lay the blame the contractor, etc.

The contractors did the value engineering. This is a major FUBAR. They need to make names... much of the "easy" mechanical stuff was filed out to City-approved under represented contractors. I was there.

That is correct. Many larger civil engineering firms are very good at having unqualified people manage projects. I would be interested to know who the geotechnical firm/engineer was on this project.

Did some more digging and my suspicions were confirmed...

Hearing the description of the work being done definitely gives me pause...
Description of Building Process for MSY

quote:

Building in a Swamp

The airport’s location on reclaimed swampland presented additional challenges and delays for the project. The most recent delay came in September, when an inspection revealed that nearly 2,000 ft of the project’s 12-in. main sewer line was sagging because of subsidence in the swampy soils. The original design relied on gravity to move the sewage out.
...
Contractors took steps to address the soil issues even before the project broke ground. They started by fortifying the swampy soil, hauling in 1.8 million cu yd of sand to compact the ground below the site, then let the sand settle for 240 days. That meant delivering 460 to 600 truckloads of sand dredged from the Mississippi River to the site six nights a week for 47 weeks, while also ensuring that construction traffic was not overly disruptive to surrounding neighborhoods.

I would guess that they did not adequately stabilize the underlying soil, and these problems will persist and cause additional issues over time. If your foundation isn't set, you have a mess on your hands.

How many have you been on where they have to cut over a hundred holes in the slab just before the projected open? And where they won't or can't even identify the issue.
