Nimitz did not act stupidly on this day. God bless the US Navy and all those brave men.

The Japanese could’ve very easily won Midway had they put more emphasis in their preparation for the battle. They could’ve used the Shokaku and the Zuikaku and overwhelmed the Americans in terms of airpower. Yes, the Shokaku was damaged after Coral Sea and Zuikaku’s air fleet was gutted after the fighting, but they very easily could’ve sailed with the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu. The Yorktown was damaged at Coral Sea, but she was repaired in time for Midway. It was possible, but the Japanese were still in their invincible, victory disease phase, underestimated the Americans and paid dearly.
Also, the Japanese should not have attempted the invasion of the Aleutian islands of Dutch harbor, Attu and Kiska at the same time as Midway. That invasion used up valuable resources. Additionally, a couple small carriers that sailed north could’ve helped down south.
