I still think its a slippery slope where emotions over logic will be the deciding factor since it's a school shooting.

Yeah but I think Rittenhouse should prove to you logic and reading the law can overcome emotion.

Teacher reported a disturbing note on Ethan's desk, including the following:
-Semiautomatic handgun pointing at a note: “The thoughts won’t stop, help me”
-Bullet with “Blood everywhere” written above it
-Drawing of a person appearing to be shot and bleeding
-Notes reading, "My life is useless" and "The world is dead"
-Parents are summoned to the school and Ethan is brought to the office
-School counselor recommends Ethan is enrolled into counseling in the next 48 hours

If this would have happened to 15 year old me in 1977, they would have had to call in EVERY coach from the gym to "try" to stop my father from stomping my arse into the office floor

LA is limited to handguns with the aforementioned allowances for instruction, target and hunting along with the written permission exemption which is rare:

§95.8. Illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile

A. It is unlawful for any person who has not attained the age of eighteen years knowingly to possess any handgun on his person. Any person possessing any handgun in violation of this Section commits the offense of illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile.

B.(1) On a first conviction, the offender shall be fined not more than one hundred dollars and imprisoned for not less than ninety days and not more than six months.

(2) On a second conviction, the offender shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars and imprisoned with or without hard labor for not more than two years.

(3) On a third or subsequent conviction, the offender shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars and imprisoned at hard labor for not more than five years.

(4) A juvenile adjudicated delinquent under this Section, having been previously found guilty or adjudicated delinquent for any crime of violence as defined by R.S. 14:2(B), or attempt or conspiracy to commit any such offense, shall upon a first or subsequent conviction be fined not less than five hundred dollars and not more than one thousand dollars and shall be imprisoned with or without hard labor for not less than six months and not more than five years. At least ninety days shall be served without benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.

C. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to any person under the age of eighteen years who is:

(1) Attending a hunter's safety course or a firearms safety course.

(2) Engaging in practice in the use of a firearm or target shooting at an established range.

(3) Hunting or trapping pursuant to a valid license issued to him pursuant to the laws of this state.

(4) Traveling to or from any activity described in Paragraph (1), (2), or (3) of this Subsection while in possession of an unloaded gun.

(5) On real property with the permission of his parent or legal guardian and with the permission of the owner or lessee of the property.

(6) At such person's residence and who, with the permission of such person's parent or legal guardian, possesses a handgun.

(7) Possessing a handgun with the written permission of such person's parent or legal guardian; provided that such person carries on his person a copy of such written permission.

D. For the purposes of this Section "handgun" means a firearm as defined in R.S. 14:37.2, provided however, that the barrel length shall not exceed twelve inches.

Acts 1999, No. 1218, §1; Acts 2019, No. 104, §2.

Michigans's law is more broad and includes all firearms:

750.234f Possession of firearm by person less than 18 years of age; exceptions; violation as misdemeanor; penalty.
Sec. 234f.

(1) Except as provided in subsection (2), an individual less than 18 years of age shall not possess a firearm in public except under the direct supervision of an individual 18 years of age or older.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to an individual less than 18 years of age who possesses a firearm in accordance with part 401 (wildlife conservation) of the natural resources and environmental protection act, Act No. 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.40101 to 324.40119 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, or part 435 (hunting and fishing licensing) of Act No. 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.43501 to 324.43561 of the Michigan Compiled Laws. However, an individual less than 18 years of age may possess a firearm without a hunting license while at, or going to or from, a recognized target range or trap or skeet shooting ground if, while going to or from the range or ground, the firearm is enclosed and securely fastened in a case or locked in the trunk of a motor vehicle.
(3) An individual who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or a fine of not more than $100.00, or both.

Why not charge the school employees who had this same information. As stated earlier, they are the ones that are in charge of and responsible for who is allowed on school property.

I would agree they should have made him leave school grounds. However, the key fact is the school didn't know about the gun since the parents failed to offer up that fact. That to me is the most damning piece of evidence. How could any sane parent be shown those drawings and told what he was doing and Not have their first thought be- WHERE is the gun? And immediately ask the kid if he had it and if he said no, still tell the school personnel there was a possibility he had it somewhere. Just mindboggling. But the good news is that now all their lives are F'ed. Too bad other people had to pay the price for their malevolence.

You don't need to be a psychologist. They had all the evidence they needed.

In Bold. If this happened, then how did this happen:

I inferred it was a drawn picture of a gun, not the actual gun.

The kid definitely has to pay, but throwing the parents in jail for life is a bit much. If we throw the parents of people under 18 in jail for life for their kids killing people, we would need more prisons.

They gave him the gun, knew he was having major issues, refused to do shite about it, and prevented the school from doing anything about it.

They 100% should be in jail. Boo fricking hoo for them. They are the kinds of gun owners who ruin it for everyone else. frick them.

And no, we wont need more prisons if parents stop acting like fricking idiots letting hormonal teens have easy access to weapons.

but do you know how many kids say shite like this on a daily basis?
that doesn't really matter. how many are saying it whose parents just bought them a new handgun? and the parents were made aware of this:

you're making this out to be a lot less than it was. it wasn't a quiet introvert who wrote a few depressing poems in english calss and bought a gun on the black market.

It doesn't take a psychologist to understand this is extremely concerning behavior.

Well, why in the frick was it not taken from him in the first place by administration?

That doesn’t make a lick of sense how the boy was allowed back in school with a weapon.

Smells fishy.

Ah. They didn’t make that very clear. Not unlike many other points this article tried to make.
