By the end of the night, it would be a riot. There’s no other word to describe what happened and still be honest. It turned into a riot. I can’t tell you where it all started. I don’t know when or how it will end. But I can tell you where it turned — the fire someone set at Thomas Jefferson’s feet.

really don't care if its taken down at this point other than the fact that it will just embolden this crap in the future. The statue had become a pawn and I'm glad the bitching will be over.
That said, I'm a lot more angry that Woodfin pretty much allowed the rioting and looting last night. The police were held back blocks away while people were getting hurt and businesses were being burned. Then he blames it on saying they had "intelligence" that the riot was going to be elsewhere so the police were stretched thin trying to cover that area....which is such a lie.
Agree with all this. Spot on.

It's really messed up that black people get their own history month but normal people don't get a confederate history month

"Take down the Confederate statues and we'll be satisfied."
"Ok".
"Oh wait, those statues celebrate racism, take them down too!"
"But you just said..."
"Take them down you racist! How dare you whitesplain!"
And pretty soon, nothing is left, because no one can meet the purity test you and the authoritarian liberals require.

Good. Those losers didn't earn monuments.

Must have seen an old white dude and thought “muh racism.”

FunnyMaine didn't coordinate this
He stood in front of a group of peaceful protesters, told them not to destroy the businesses in town, then told them "not" to go to the park and "not" to destroy the statue. Then, he personally led them to the park where he continued to stoke the fires. He then watched and maybe helped people attempt the bring the statue down. Then, he talked with the mayor, gave the folks some BS line about coming back tomorrow, then he left them to continue rioting.
He almost immediately got online and started damage control saying that those rioting and tearing shite down were not people from his town. Yet, they were just standing in front of him listening to his speech.
So, yes, "Funnymaine" is responsible for everything that happened after that, including the assault and robbery of a journalist and cameraman. He should be in jail for inciting a riot.
He knew full and damn well what he was doing and the ramifications it would have. He could not stand not having Birmingham in the spotlight.
To top it off, he started a GoFundMe or whatever to solely help "black-owned businesses" that were damaged during the riot he incited completely disregarding that, most likely, there were also non-black-owned businesses damaged and looted. He doesn't care a bit about that, though. He deserves every bit of negative publicity he gets, and people should not rush to his defense.

He was basically a Scandinavian merchant mariner selling cotton to the English to help the South's war effort, so basically like much of New England and New York prior to the War. But yeah he was about to be tried as a war criminal, that sounds super duper scary.

I was watching earlier. I was slightly amused to hear the roar of police sirens occasionally being picked up by the livestream. No doubt they were on their way to another Birmingham homicide, but you know statues and racism and shite.

Yeah, let’s teach these uneducated fricking government leaches that violence and destruction will give them what they want.

He was arrested and pardoned in 1863, two years prior to the end of the war.
