Of the 164 graduates of that class, 59 of them would eventually become generals. Among their number were two future five star generals - Omar Bradley and Dwight D. Eisenhower - the latter of which was elected the 34th President of the United States in 1952. Because of the amount of generals this class produced, the 1915 graduating class of West Point has gone down in history as "The Class the Stars Fell On."

Very cool and something I did not know about. I would imagine every class for the 10 years after that saw a lot of action

Interesting.
Assuming they were 22 y/o when they graduated in 1915…., they’d have been 48 years old in 1941.

up till the big one there was a big stagnation in the careers of military officers, a lot of junior officers were damn near retirement age

Yeah, just look at Eisenhower. At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, he was a lieutenant colonel in charge of a battalion.

and then you have guys like Robin Olds who graduated in '43 and was Major and squadron commander at 22, what's your point? there were tons of late 30 year old, almost 40 year old lieutenants at the beginning of WWII, service academy grads are in a position of getting promoted faster even in times of stagnation

I work with a lot of service academy grads, many who have done liaison work with the schools as part of their reserve jobs, seems like the majority opinion among them is they won't let their own kids go to present day military academies

My point is, war breeds faster promotion opportunities if you are a competent officer. Eisenhower was an O-4 in 1939 and an O-11 five years later. And I'll see your Robin Olds and raise you George Armstrong Custer. He graduated from West Point in 1861 and was a brigadier general and brigade commander at the age of 25. How did that happen? War.

From what I understand, the US military officer corps is basically a democratic socialist's wet dream.

Generals are generally pretty old with 30 plus years of service. Once you hit Colonel you really don’t do much work for a living.
