I’d skip the Tail of the Dragon if I were you, especially if you’re planning doing it on a weekend. It use to be fun but now it’s just too crowded.
Rode it on Sunday, around noon, and it wasn't busy at all. I actually expected it to be much more crowded.

quote:i'm guessing somene's beat me to it but route 66 is a great way to get out west in style.
Sincerely appreciate the suggestions so far. All have been added the list.
take the only road that goes into utah from arizona and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime views as you snake your way up to moab. easy drive to salt lake, idaho, yellowstone and glacier from there.
in fact i wouldn't consider going to glacier any other way.
take the northern route back through the dakotas, badlands...stop in deadwood and check out seth bullock's gravestone and mt rushmore & sturgis are nearby.
wall drug is always a great place to stop and take a break.
TAKE PICS OF YOUR CAR IN FRONT OF THE PLACES YOU GO.
Email someone you like on here to upload the pics if its too tricky while driving or your don't have good service. when we went cell service was spotty as hell.
always top off your gas when you stop. you never know where the next gas station is.

I heard the Road to the Sun requires a reservation this year.

Highway 1 from California up to Washington is a great drive with cool weather, beautiful rocky coastlines, and redwood trees!

In addition to, or maybe even instead of, Tail of the Dragon, the Cherohala skyway is the next paved road over the mountains to the south. It's a recent addition to the road system and little used.
In southwest Arkansas going to southeast Oklahoma the Talhina Ridge Road is just that. I was lucky enough one night to drive it about 10pm with thunder and lightening storms in both the valleys north and south of the road.
In northeastern AZ/southeastern UT, the road through Monument Valley and splurge and stay on one of the two Upper Floors of the Navaho Hotel called The View. Properly named.
Where do you plan to touch Canada? The road from Banff to Jasper shouldn't be missed and try to stay at Chateau Lake Louise.
In Amarillo east Chicken Fried Steak at the Country Kitchen. And see the Palo Duro Canyon nearby.
In Alabama drive up to the Lake Guntersville State Park Lodge and get a room that faces west. Look down on Bald Eagles hunting.
NW Tennessee: Reelfoot Lake. You've always heard of the earthquakes that range church bells in Boston, time to see what they created.
Near Blacksburg VA, the road up to Mountain Lake (and the resort hotel there) is one that's curves. Then it used to be a turn the engine off and save gas as you go back down the curves at the speed limit.
Have you driven even part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Limited speed and cars driving for the view, not the car's performance.
Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel- if you're in the area.

Update 1.0 …………. and Final ………….. FOR now
The best laid plans do not always end as planed. A case of good & bad decisions:
* The Bad - the previous week I had so respiratory issues. Tue. morning was not good at all, but was absolutely determined to go. I got to the car, turned it over & sitting there while it warmed up, I had the thought, for a moment, this is not a good idea today.
Got to Leeds, AL, Barber Motorsport. Guess there was a big race over the 4th weekend, so all was shutdown. So be it …. get on down the road.
Got to Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA. Not a soul in sight :-)
Decided to head to Porsche NA a day early. The hotel in across the street. A day early, but the staff was great. Was ok all day, sitting in the saddle, but stand up & I could barely breath. A few folks were waking out as I sat there, so I rolled down the window & asked if they could get a bellman, etc. to give me a hand.
The guy was wearing a Porsche shirt, so he helped. Learned he is a Brand Manager for Porsche. Turns out they did not have a wheelchair. He opens the lobby Porsche store and rolls out a wheelchair that looks like a Porsche Design product :-)
Got through the night, but in the morning, got from the bed to the chair & sat ……. for two hours before I could do anything.
The good - Faced the fact that day 1 was indeed a bad decision. It was either go to Emergency in Atlanta or make a run to home base. Again, the staff was great; got the car loaded & got me in the car.
Departed at 6:30 CST and pulled in the driveway at 12:42. For those interested in the “Escort” score (Escort Redline), Escort 9 - Highway Patrol 0.
My Admin Asst., an office/home, helped me in & unloaded. Sat on the porch with oxygen & enjoyed a Bud winding down & decided to head to the VA. As usual, the NOLA VA was great. Blood oxygen level was 85%. IV with steroids & antibiotics. Almost kept me overnight, but released me. My girl was a trooper, she waited well past quitting time & got me home.
Porsche came through & let my son take the scheduled track time on Thursday. He was able to rearrange his schedule & flew in the Atlanta yesterday. He is coming here this afternoon.
So much for the Swan Song ………. For now. Have not packed it in yet. Have meds to take for a week and I will reevaluate the possibility of starting again. Will have to adjust the plan cause I may need assistance on any given day, but one day at a time.
The problem with a 911 road-trip is you just don’t want to stop …. the road keeps calling :-)

Probably already mentioned, but if you are going through CA take the PCH from Monterey down to Santa Barbara.
Also Stunt Road near Malibu is a great driving area.

Pacific coast highway coming down that west coast would be amazing as well.
Yeah I’ve road tripped the coast from SF up to Seattle before and you are going to want to drive through the redwood forest and drive the Oregon coast, pitstopping along the way for sights at cannon beach, fern canyon, etc. will be beautiful.

I spend a ton of time in Glacier Natl Park. Going to the sun road is an excellent choice sir. Maybe I’ll run into you there at the end of this month. Enjoy

If you’re driving through Washington State I highly recommend checking out Crater Lake NP then start heading west to the coast and check out Long Beach WA. From there drive south into Oregon and take the 101 Pacific coast highway down into California. Visit the Redwoods NF and enjoy the scenery of the California coast. Can’t beat it.
