re: The lack of men wearing suits at weddings and funerals is sad.

The idea of every wedding being suit or even sports coat appropriate is pretty silly.
Last year a family friend was married in uptown New Orleans, high end wedding, suit or sports coat absolutely.
A few weeks ago my moms cousin was married and that wedding requested you bring your own chair, probably could have gotten by with khaki shorts and a collared shirt.

How much time do you spend pondering what other men wear or don't wear?

I couldn’t think of anything more trashy than khakis and a polo at a wedding or funeral

I thought they still enforced the dress code at commanders?

The defensive narcissists in this thread make me sad. It’s just another example of men refusing to grow up and act like adults. Your fathers failed you.
I can’t imagine not wearing a dark suit to a funeral and a sport coat (at minimum!) to a wedding. If you don’t want to spend money on a suit because you’ll only wear it once a year, do more things where a suit would be appropriate. Go to a nice restaurant, go to a play...something to justify the expense. I’m about to go buy a nice dress overcoat to go with a suit because I’ll be attending a funeral in the near future and the weather will be cold. A tie is not uncomfortable when you are wearing a shirt that fits properly.

Outback isn't a nice steakhouse.

I'm baffled at this. There are more events to wear a suit to besides weddings and funerals.
The last couple of weddings that I have attended were very informal. If the need arises where I need to wear a suit then I will most likely pick one up but it has yet to occur.

I'm reading your position and I don't think you know what this word means.

The most informal I've ever gone to a wedding was slacks, button up, and a jacket.

The weddings were both outdoors and one of them featured a long bonfire which was lit with some tannerite. I was out of place with my button-up and slacks, thankfully I had a PFG and some shorts in the vehicle for after the ceremony.

People should at least wear a button up with a tie and a pair of slacks if they can’t afford a suit. What is that? Like $40 combined at Walmarks?

i recently went to a "texan" wedding where the groomsmen were wearing jeans

I'll always wear a suit, or sports coat and slacks, but admit to often ditching the tie..too damn hot in La summers.
And I agree with the general assertions, it's made even eating out at nice establishments, and even top-tier Vegas joints like Wynn, Bellagio, Aria, etc..feel cheesy with all the Cali t-shirt flip flop untucked collared shirt crowd meandering about.

Naw, he just put on a short sleeve button-up for the rest of the night.

I don't own a suit that fits anymore, the last time i wore one was to a Sorority formal...I don't want to date myself but that was a while ago. I have yet to ware one for work(it would get ruined instantly and not to mention the tie is a safety hazard)

No. Because I'm respectful of others. That respect begins with how I present myself.

Like you, I wear suits consistently for work. I'd rather not have to but I understand the need for them and the message they convey.
