re: The impending DEF shortage and why it's important

Not at all. I'm deeply involved in this in an industrial capacity.
The simple truth is that meeting emissions standards by treating the exhaust is far, far, FAR better than in-cylinder controls. It's simpler and more effective and better for the engine.

I imagined it because reduced emissions isn’t beneficial in any way from a business standpoint.

He actually just traded his in. In four years he put 225,000 miles on it.
I didn't even know that engine was a thing until I saw it in our fleet.
I want one. Bad. That engine is what Ford's ecoboost needed to be. That dodge in our fleet is lifted and gets 20+ mpg on the interstate. My dad's ecoboost doesn't do that well.

Not when energy has more than doubled in price, good has gone up damn near 33%-50% in most instances, home prices (rent and taxes) up 25%+, inflation will be recorded as 10%+, etc…
No there is nothing but business when you can barely afford to live.

Not from where I'm sitting.
We've spent $20k on a def system inside of 12 weeks.

When I worked in transportation my old boss called it Hippie Fluid

In all my years in the earthmoving equipment industry, you’re literally the first person I’ve encountered who has anything remotely positive to say about Tier 4 emissions.

Despite what the TV tells you, diesel emissions are not going to hurt you or the planet.

Before. Def. Vehicles, we were getting 250-300k+. Per vehicle with out any major engine issues. Now we're replacing cab forwards. Every 3 years because the vehicles are running like shite. And not worth repairing, trading in for new one.
Engine issues. Is it the def. Fluid? Probably not , but it's looking like more than a coincidence.

Clearly Wrong? You’re still trying to argue a pathetic 5% bump in fuel efficiency, which isn’t even the case most of the time, is worth the thousands, actually hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases, in higher maintenance, repairs, and downtime that are a direct result of the emissions system? You can’t be that stupid. You’re not serious. You’re trolling.
Well then it's puzzling that my fuel mileage went up 10-15% after removing the aftertreatment system!

AFM ain't helping you either.
frick Obama and all his voters for that. AFM was born out of the response to his fuel mileage standards.

Does anyone remember the VW diesel "scandal"? The mileage that some of their TDI cars were getting was insane. A buddy of mine had one that was getting around 52mpg on the highway. After the "fix"? 40mpg with the DEF system working.

It is better for the engine, true. The engines from 2007-2012 were terrible, but simpler? No way. Many engines still have EGR valves and DPF's. Now they have DEF/SCR too. Too many fragile parts that are prone to fouling and/or failure.

I just took mine on vacation, drove almost 2000 miles. Vast majority i went about 85 and i got 24mpg, and i haven't done the delete yet but i'm about to b/c i can't get my check engine light to stay off b/c of the stupid arse Diesel Particulate Filter. Now that i don't drive much for work anymore and i do mostly city driving it comes on regularly.
And I could give two shits about an inspection sticker. I've had this truck for 3.5 years now and it's never had one on it, and the older truck i had before it had an expired one on it for over 4 years. As long as you don't drive by LSU during school hours, no one gives a shite about inspection stickers around here.

Would I like to be able to buy a fully mechanical non-emissions brand new engine for everything? Of course I would. I'd like to be able to buy a brand new $6000 truck as well. It's 2022 and it's senseless to even talk about it.
Aftertreatment cleans up diesel exhaust ALOT, and it does it by just spraying cat piss in the pipe. This is one instance where it's nearly impossible to make an intelligent argument that it should go away.
Business sense wise, it makes no sense for a chemical plant to have an effluent unit instead of just pumping the shite into the river. It's NEVER business savvy to control your environmental footprint unless it's subsidized.

No inspection stickers at all in the Sip.

I don't think that can all be blamed on DEF.

You can still rebuild old engines without having to retrofit them with tier 4 emissions. A lot of folks are taking advantage of that loophole.
A guy I knows does this with his Peterbuilt 379s and older 389s he just rebuilds the engines and keeps the trucks in tip top shape

Damn near every dime I spend on our trucks is related to DEF / SCR issues. It is absolutely unreal. Fluid sits too long, throw a code. Dont fill it the correct amount, derate light. Havent regened 7 fricking times in the last 48 hours?, code. Filters too dirty, sit your arse down. etc etc. At this point I would rather get all pre-DEF trucks.
Posted on 6/20/22 at 4:23 pm to Darth_Vader
My new JD 5055 tractors don’t use DEF but have a regen system that’s a pain in the arse. I work on these tractors more than the 5400s I have that are over 30 years old. They are pieces of shite
