The impending DEF shortage and why it's important

For those who don't know what DEF is, it's Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Any diesel engine manufactured since 2010 has to have it to operate per federal regulations. Just as the price of diesel, due to it's importance in the trucking and shipping industry, impacts virtually everything you buy, so does the price of DEF.
DEF is mostly water, over 60% in fact. But it's over 30% urea. Therein lies the problem. Russia is the world's #1 exporter of urea. And with our sanctions and embargos on Russia, America's supply of urea is in trouble. Shortages are already being felt. And it's not just going to impact the trucking industry. Farmers rely on tractors, tractors run on diesel. Thus farmers rely on DEF as well. This shortage is going to further exasperate inflation on virtually everything. and it's going to land a double whammy on food prices from both a production and transportation standpoint.
LINK
And in case you're wondering what exactly DEF does, that's easy. It does absolutely nothing. It doesn't make the engine run better, longer, more efficient, anything. There is not one single benefit derived from having engines use DEF fluid. But per federal law, if you sell and engine in the US, it has to have a an emissions system that uses DEF.

there seems like an easy solution here.....one that our betters will absolutely not even consider.

There’s going to be a shot load of big trucks unable to move if this holds true.

All this in the name of combating global warming.

I've been seeing this more and more. Hopefully things can settle a bit because at least on the surface (and in my limited understanding of it), it seems like this has the potential to get pretty bad.

If you own a car or truck that uses DEF, the system won't let it start without the tank being refilled. Not sure if that applies to big rigs too.

Price is rising too, I buy the DEF at Walmart for my Duramax 3.0, a year ago it was close to $6 bucks. Now, it's almost $12. Thank goodness the truck doesn't drink much of it.

Most people I know with diesel pick up trucks pull all that emissions BS off of them.
ETA- I just ordered 700 gallons of exhaust fluid for our 18 wheelers and forklifts. This lasts about a year.

There’s nothing quite like sitting somewhere for long periods of time waiting for your DEF system to regenerate. If you know, you know.

We need to pray it doesn’t reach that point. I know the notion of the collapse of society in a Mad Max Thunderdome like picture gets thrown around a lot. But if the trucks stop running, that’s what would happen.

Yeah you can do a def delete if you live in a state that doesn't do emissions testing for inspections like Texas. It's still illegal but...

Urea is literally piss. We can’t even do that?

From a cursory reading of a few things, that doesn't seem to be true at all.

GREEN ENERGY = nobody doing anything.

Get your trucks deleted asap.

What did the pro war folks have to do with making Russia start a fricking war?

Can you substitute natural urea? If so keep a screw top milk jug with you and when it’s time for your oil change you can have several gallons of piss ready to go.
