Lots of disturbing truth in this thread.

I'm not a mechanic, I just find out how much it costs us everytime something breaks. Earlier in the year I did an audit on how much we've dropped on our front end loaders over a 3 year period. I can tell you that if you added up just the costs of def-related parts, service calls, and rental fees in that time, we could have bought a refurbed loader, and we need something comparable to a 924, minimum.

So in other words, the cost of having Tier 4 emissions system has by itself cost your company well over $150,000.

Anyone else have anything to say about the “benefits” of DEF?

I could just give it to a hot girl at discounted simp prices so she still has some wiggle room on the profit margin.

Great tip

Not anybody who understands anything about diesel engines at even the most basic level.

Can you substitute natural urea? If so keep a screw top milk jug with you and when it’s time for your oil change you can have several gallons of piss ready to go.

Lol I was curious myself- unfortunately, natural urine is 95% water and only 2% urea.

This is exactly what we did, only through Volvo.

Don't get me started on those frickers.

let me guess, they spent a couple years telling you that most of the issues you are dealing with are operator related (not running regens, not adding DEF, ect) and not machine failure. Charging you for each call out and for parts

Then after a year or two, try to sell you the new model. Maybe brought a factory rep by to tell you all the issues are fixed.

Urea is literally piss. We can’t even do that?

There's probably a piss tax that makes it more cost effective to import from Russia.

DEF cleans that stuff, which is just ash that disperses and settles in the ground

Urea is not used for soot, it is used for NOx

They give off more NOx than gas engines

There’s your problem. Volvo and other manufacturers design their machines to last maybe 15,000-20,000 hours and then they’re done. Cat is different though. Cat machines, other than the small ones, are specifically designed to have a second or even third life via Cat’s Certified Rebuild program. I’ve seen rock trucks, loaders. And dozers that have been rebuilt multiple times.

One of the last things I did as a PSSR was close a deal on a 836 landfill compactor certified rebuild. The hour meter was at 18,000 hours. But the machine actually had over 50,000 hours from previous rebuilds. The deciding factor on them going with the rebuild was it is a pre-emissions machine.

It's very hard to get a delete done any longer. FedGov cracked down on companies that did it. If you know how to do it you can do it yourself but its going to void your warranty and you won't be able to get a inspection sticker.

My brother did his 2018 Ram and my father's 2016 Ram in a day in the drive way. It did not seem too difficult. Their trucks have been deleted for 3-4 years now and no issues getting inspection stickers either. Pretty sure both of their warranties were over with anyway.

Really?

I've got a hard-on for a ram 1500 ecodiesel now.

Stuff built in the late 90s are getting complete rebuilds as they are modern enough to have the big power and AC traction systems but old enough they don't have the insane emissions requirements.

Tier 4 locomotives have been nothing but problems I understand. Besides being expensive.

This is the real reason Chicago’s Metra system is still using GM-built EMD locomotives. Their “new” ones are going to be rebuilt Tier 3 freight locomotives.

DEF is mostly water, over 60% in fact. But it's over 30% urea

So, diesel trucks need piss to run?

I understand them far better than most, and exhaust aftertreatment is the best thing that's happened to them.

You can’t exasperate something non-sentient. You are probably looking for “exacerbate”.

Thanks to the government and idiot environmental activists, yes. But there isn’t enough urea in piss for it to be effective. You need north of 30% urea. Piss is like 2%.

Locomotives can just be rebuilt over and over for decades. I've seen "new" rebuilds of locomotives built in the 60's.

The frames and truck castings don't wear out. They'll put new cabs/hoods on them and call them rebuilds.

Any diesel engine manufactured since 2010 has to have it to operate per federal regulations.

I have small tractors that are new that don’t use it

I got my farm trucks deleted and straight pipes put on them

If you own a car or truck that uses DEF, the system won't let it start without the tank being refilled. Not sure if that applies to big rigs too.

You can get the system taken off and reprogram the computer to read the tank as full. It’s not street legal but a lot of mechanics will do it because nobody really cares. Costs about 1500 bucks
