The idea that we each have a 'learning style' is nonsense

Do you prefer to learn by seeing, listening, or doing?
These are the so-called learning styles – visual, auditory, and kinesthetic – and proponents of such an approach believe that knowing your learning style can help you become a better learner.
Despite the lack of evidence to support such an approach to learning, the concept remains hugely popular, no doubt in part because learning via our preferred style can lead us to feel like we’ve learned more, even though we haven’t.
In a survey, 96% of teachers were found to believe in learning styles. But it turns out this theory is nonsense.
For a new paper in Anatomical Sciences Education, a pair of researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine have conducted just such an investigation with hundreds of undergrads.
The results indicated that student grade performance was not correlated in any meaningful way with their dominant learning style or with any learning style(s) they scored highly on. Also, while most students (67 per cent) actually failed to study in a way consistent with their supposedly preferred learning style, those who did study in line with their dominant style did not achieve a better grade
Instead, there were specific study strategies, such as practicing microscope work and using lecture notes, that were associated with better grade performance, regardless of students’ learning style. Imagine that, basic skills like practicing and studying have a positive impact on student learning. Maybe practice does make perfect, for all students.
The researchers concluded that the results “provide strong evidence that instructors and students should not be promoting the concept of learning styles for studying and/or for teaching interventions. Thus, the adage of ‘I can’t learn subject X because I am a visual learner’ should be put to rest once and for all.” Jborden & The Guardian
Add this to the long list of things that teachers focus on that are basically a waste of everyone's time. It's also a convenient excuse for parents as to why little Jimmy isn't doing well in school - it's his learning style that's not being catered to.
Do we each have preferences when it comes to how we receive information? Sure. Does it matter when it comes to how we actually learn? No. We learn through practice. If you want to learn something, you get in reps. How about these kids spend time practicing and reading instead of trying to figure out what their "learning style" is?

You are either intelligent and have the ability to retain information or you don’t. Kind of like a baseball player. You can either hit or can’t hit. Not much hitting lessons for Jayden are going to help.

You work with your hands don’t you.

Just an excuse to expand funding for the government-educational complex.

And uses them to math.

As an educator you seriously don’t believe in different learning styles?
Am I taking crazy pills?
Memory 100% unquestionably works differently for different people. Some people memorize sounds over anything else, others recall visual objects or words on paper.
When I recall something I draw from what I see. I literally look back to the visual in front of me. Im good at recalling text and written numbers. I’m very bad at recalling what people said verbally.
We’ve known about this for a long time. And obviously memory is a huge part of education. If one doesn’t take in the information in the way they recall things best they won’t remember it as well.

It really depends. I'm kind of a visual person. If I were to learn some new task that involved a lot of technique, I'd much prefer to watch someone skilled do it, than just read 20 pages of text on it.

My academic learning “ style “ was learning how to cheat efficiently and stealthily.

Here's a research paper on the topic. It's a good read.

You're part of the problem.

Learning styles is backed by research. Your cantankerous opinion is irrelevant.
Edit - reading through your previous link in a little bit. Have to say I’m intrigued.
Edit edit - well, Pecker, you son of a bitch. You’ve got me thinking today. Turns out there’s a whole host of research out there challenging, questioning, and debunking learning styles.

So you present information to students in multiple "styles"?

There's been a movement to try to pair students with teachers based on "learning styles." There's enough evidence available that it's not helping anyone and is essentially a waste of everyone's time.
Yet, here we have teachers parroting the nonsense of learning styles and refusing to hear otherwise.

But but....my kid is a bad test taker

I think to a point. But I liked practicing problems and figuring it out on my own much more than listening to a boring lecture. So I'd often check out during class and figure out problems on my own afterwards. That was my 'learning style'. Not saying it's the only way that worked for me, but it's what I chose.

As a guy who couldn't get a base hit as a freshmen to it suddenly clicking and being a 3-hole hitter, hitting lessons most certainly flipped a switch for me. So this analogy is garbage. Experience obviously helped, but it was literally like a switch. Something clicked with me and I could see pitches like I never could before.

FWIW, I'm not sure I wanna hear a lecture about learning from someone calling himself "Pecker" and using pornstache-Aikman as an avatar.

I am a teacher and have never believed in learning styles, nor have I used them in lesson development. You're right, MILLIONS of educational dollars are wasted yearly on nonsense like this.

So they're getting lower scores than the non-sorted teaching (I thought it just said there was no positive impact)?
To me the issue seems to be with studying styles... like the lower-performers need training in how best to study.

In terms of IQ I'd be willing to bet that I'm smarter than anyone in your family.
But in case you don't like Troy Aikman's mustache, I provided multiple links to research findings and methodology.

Wut?
I can't imagine an intelligent person making such a ridiculous claim.
