His book, My Daddy was a Pistol and I'm a Son of a Gun, was given to me by a friend shortly after my daddy died. I laughed and cried through most of the book.
I always liked his columns, but his books were the real treasures. It was better to get nestled into his world for awhile to really appreciate his perspective.
I truly wonder if today's generation would find him funny? Could they relate to his humor? I would hope so, but I'm afraid that in the great parade of life that his float has passed on by.

Shoot Low Boys, They are Riding Shetland Ponies.
Though it wasn't side-splittingly funny, I remember a column of his where he said he'd eat at Waffle House and when he made it to his car alive he and the waitress in the window would cheer.
He had heart issues and had a pig heart valve implanted and had a really good attitude about it; I believe his death was somehow related to that...

I remember when you could get fried Gizzards from KFC.

Met him at a book signing a few months before he died. Looked so sick.

He had several open heart surgeries over the course of his life and died very young - I think he was still in his forties.
One of his books was titled "Elvis Is Dead and I Don't Feel So Good Myself.

Damn, brother. Don't believe I'd told that!
A ticket to see Lewis at the Saenger, in Pensacola, was one of my high school graduation presents.

His book title that always comes to mind is "Don't Bend Over in the Garden, Granny, You Know Them Taters Got Eyes".
I loved his column in the paper when I was a kid.

A true American Icon.
Can you imagine the fun he'd have with the pussy PC culture we've become today?

You should read his farewell to Catfish, when a pet dies.
I remember reading that, it was very tender and moving.

Lewis was one of the greats. Once, Georgia Tech upset his beloved Georgia Bulldogs. The following day in the Sunday, Atlanta Journal-Constitution he wrote a column about it. It read, "Frankly, I don't want to talk about it." The rest of the column was completely blank. Only he could get away with that, and we loved him for it.

I wish I could find his column about the Confederate flag coming down from the Georgia Statehouse. It was classic Grizzard.

I avoid salad bars thanks to Grizzard. He wrote a column about standing in line at a salad bar and watching a kid about 8 sneeze into the lettuce..
Any time I see a salad bar in a restaurant I think of Lewis Grizzard.

In the late 1980's Lewis Grizzard came to Baton Rouge to give a speech at some function, maybe the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce annual banquet...something like that.
One of the requirements he had in his contract was that he got to play a round of golf at the Country Club of Louisiana. As our company was the host for his visit, we took him to CCLA to play his round as our guest.
When we picked him up in the lobby of the (then) Hilton in Corporate Square, his 'companion' who was about 15 years his junior and was an OT 9.9 came along but didn't play.
After about 15 minutes on the golf course she started whining about how hot and humid it was, how she was bored, etc.
Grizzard looked at us and said in his Southern drawl loud enough for her to hear, "She don't travel too good."
She never complained again the rest of the day.

"Shoot Low They're Riding Shetlands". Was that him?
Did not read it just recall that book when I was a kid. At the mall at Walden Books.
Then I would go to Chess King and buy a SWEET shirt. Or try on a Member Only Jacket.

I can't remember which book it came from but I giggled like a loon at his story about UGA licking himself at the 50 yard line and him saying something along the lines of "Don't you wish you could do that?" and his friend responded, "That dog would bite youuuuuuu."

No, because he'd have been fired long ago.
He was a true southern icon that loved the south and loved UGA. Couldn't hardly stay married or sober and had a bum ticker, but the man was one of a kind.
