Google: "Greatest Sports Headline In The History Of Sports"
Will bring you to an article about a "headline" of one of Lew Grizzards sports columns when he was very young.
The next day, Georgia was playing South Carolina and
his headline was:
"DOGS TO PLAY COCKS WITH DICKS OUT"
The article is funny stuff.

just to give some background so the headline makes sense, one of UGA's better players was named Happy Dicks (I know, i'm being serious though) and he was not able to play in the game, hence the headline.
My memory is fuzzy but I think the story around that was that Lewis was working for the AJC while still at UGA as a young buck. HD had something happen very late in the week (and late in the evening to boot), so Lewis basically edited the news headline at the very last hour. Essentially there was no one to come in behind him to edit or oversee that day's edition. He said he went back to his apartment to start pounding beers with his buddies and told them the next day they would witness one of the best headlines ever.

"Chili dawgs always bark at night" made a long flight back home pass rather quickly.

I miss this guy. His columns were great. His books were better. His speaking engagement routines were off the charts. Along with most of his books, a framed & signed letter from Lewis is one of my most prized possessions.
I was introduced to him by a friend when I was still in my 20's. I was gifted with two of his books for singing at a wedding. "Don't Sit Under The Grits Tree..." and "Elvis is Dead...". They knew I'd appreciate his humor and they were spot-on. I was a faithful fan and reader since that time. I'm 53 now.

I think of him often, as a teen I loved reading his newspaper columns and read a few of his books.
"You will never meet true love in a barroom, believe me, I tried." One of the memorable Grizzard quotes. He was married five times.

@75503Tiger...
...and he maintained that all his ex-wives were pretty good old girls. He couldn't remember any of their names though...he just refers to them as "Plaintiff".

My Favorite character; Weyman C Wannamaker Jr, A great American! My wife and I kick ourselves every time we think about passing on going to one of his performances in Laf. back in the early 90's.

I've read several of his books. i always looked forward to his syndicated column in the paper. One of my favorites was "What You Can Tell By What Folks Drink". I can't post the link for fear of it getting whacked, but a Google search will guide you to the 1985 Orlando Sentinal article. The man had some insight.

quote:He also had a great one about the UGA marching band having to remove the word Dixie from their name (at the time The Dixie Redcoat Band) - as it was considered offensive to some. Lewis, as was his way, was able to figure out how most of the other words in the name could be considered offensive and that by removing all of the other offensive words, the group would just be called "The" which was a dumb name for a group of musicians.
I wish I could find his column about the Confederate flag coming down from the Georgia Statehouse. It was classic Grizzard.
One of my favorite bits from Lewis's concert performances was Sittin' Up With the Dead, about the death of the great uncle of his boyhood friend and idol, Wayman C. Wannamaker, Jr., great American.

He once explained the difference between the words naked (not wearing any clothes) and nekkid (not wearing any clothes and up to something).
