Insects have been drawing attention as an alternative source of protein to solve the global food shortage.

So young entrepreneur Osawa Asami set up a vending machine offering a whole range of bug-based snacks in the town of Takamori in Nagano Prefecture in central Japan.

quote:

The menu consists of 18 types of deep-fried insects, including crickets and grasshoppers. Some are sprinkled with salt, and some are chocolate flavoured. Prices range from 1,000 to 2,600 yen, or between €6 and €19.

As Earth's growing population puts more pressure on global food production, insects are increasingly seen as a viable food source.

Edible insects are rich in protein yet can be raised much more sustainably than beef or pork. Around the world, 2 billion people in 130 countries regularly eat insects.

United Nations food experts have been pushing insects as a good source of nutrition for years. They say that their consumption could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock.

Now the global edible insect market is poised to boom, according to investment bank Barclays. Citing data from Meticulous Research, it forecasts the industry will grow to €6.7 billion by 2030 from less than €850 million in 2019.

Looks like a great place to spend money when I'm on my way to fish.

The Audubon Insectarium in NOLA has a free sampler buffet of edible insects. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty they were.

I'm not sure anything exemplifies the state of our society than the push to eat bugs and the drag queen thing.

Even if you think either are non-issues in a vacuum, any reasonable person is going "why are they constantly pushing bugs-as-food and drag queens reading to children on us?"

I've had lots of different roasted insects. Most have been quite good.

I’ve eaten crickets out the bag as a snack…tasted fine I guess, pretty inoffensive. Lots of protein for the #gainz as well

They probably tastes ok, but it’s the idea that I’m eating a bug, that I can’t get past!

The Spec's closest to my house has been selling dried and roasted insects for years.

Similar to this but they come in boxes with windows in the front so you can see the contents. I always thought that was very UNappetizing until I saw this package with a picture of a live bug.

I think this pretty much comes down to the two groups of people and their approach to food. One group only eats traditional foods that they grew up with, and they find this gross. The other group is willing to try new, different foods without much thought of perception.

Its primarily due to environmental reasons in the West. Eating crickets saves the planet~!

As if , "Hey -- bugs are tasty food AND cheap protein!" wasn't enough of a Gaslight Job -- but PAYING to eat them -- from a Bug Dispenser "Snack" Machine no less?!? (Gaslight Level 2))

There apparently is NO end to the degree of self-delusion during these insane times. ("We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented." ~ The Truman Show)

What happens during Gaslight Level 1? Turd "Snack" dispensers? I can see it as reality for helping "raise Social Awareness & Responsibility scores" (muh-SERIOUS recycling)

How about encouraging more agriculture worldwide, and not attacking the means of production, distribution, and the like by attacking fossil fuels and making people stay home because of a virus that turned out to be pretty much nothing in the grand scheme of things, but our economies were seriously damaged and affected many many more people as a result?

How about not cutting our noses off despite our faces?

Maybe instead of eating bugs, we could just farm and not destroy our energy needs without an alternative energy source in place and ready to go?
