Did the Democrats make NOLA great too?
—-They did, but the other side of that coin is, they were white supremacists.
—Now, the Confederate statues are gone but the leadership is the worst ever, and we’re talking since 1718.

I keep hearing how the Republicans and Democrats changed parties somewhere along the way. It’s the Democrats way of trying to wash their hands of their past racist sins like the KKK. So I guess it was really the Republicans who built New Orleans up. I mean, you can’t have it both ways.

Thanks for sharing.
I suspect a lot of comments will be political, apeshit slinging stuff. But, it does show we suck at building great cities/places today. There are some great new places but nothing compared to what we valued in city building from the past

Current Republicans in New Orleans threads usually get mad when I point this out.

We should have let the flooded parts of NO after Katrina return to wetlands as nature intended. Remove all flood ruined structures and vehicles and replaced with crayfish and sugarcane and cypress.

The Democrat position on crime has changed quite drastically over the past generation.

The money abandoned New Orleans about 40 years ago with the oil bust.
Oil bust also brought Houston to its knees but Compaq saved the place then businesses found out they could get land an office space for almost free.
New Orleans did not have those same advantages. Geographically, New Orleans is an island, and a small one at that. Physically expanding is problematic. Then factor in other infrastructure problems and a banking sector that consisted of really only 2 banks in Hibernia and Whitney that were prohibitively conservative in their commercial lending practices.
When you would bring an idea to them almost the first words out of their mouths would be " that'll never work" Then you point out that it has worked they would tack on......"here".

think the issue is leadership, but it has nothing to do with a political party.
The only thing you can blame Republicans for is leaving with their tax money. Everything else is on the democrats.
Who thought removing statues and changing street names would solve crime instead of just punishing repeat offenders? Democrats.

I think Katrina (and fricking democrats) ruined NOLA.
The list is a lot longer than that, but you're on the right track. Crack epidemic, suburban growth, decline of the port, the rise of Atlanta, Dallas, Houston...
Around 1960 the city fathers should've noticed they were on the downswing and done something about it. I guess what they did was say "lets milk the snot out of the tourism thing and forget everything else"

You would be wrong. The current trend of "social justice" is destroying cities, not just New Orleans.

Wtf are you talking about? It’s definitely gotten worse since then but it’s been going downhill at a hare’s pace since Mitch the bitch was in office.
It originally started going down when his father Moon was there. Had a brief period where it got better and then down the shitter to now where we’re shooting for Detroit status where the government is giving away large warehouses

Guess I wasn’t clear. After Katrina, things were getting better for 12-13 Years. People moving here, lots of public and private investment, etc.
Others are correct in pointing out a real decline started in the 60’s and things weren’t great at anytime since then. And the early 90’s was the high point of violent crime.

Oh look, another NOLA thread on the OT where a bunch of people who don’t live and have sworn off NOLA tell everyone what life is like in NOLA.

Correct. Solid observation.

This, folks, is what you call denial.
Poster points out the obvious, then denies it the very next sentence. He really wants to believe.
Keep voting Democrat. NOLA is almost there!
