The fastest man made object in history is a manhole cover

Basically what happened was the military drilled a 500’ deep shaft, placed a thermonuclear bomb at the bottom of it, covered the hole with a 500 lb. manhole cover, then detonated the bomb. It was calculated the cover was launched at approximately 125,000 MPH toward space. There’s debate on whether or not the cover burned up in the atmosphere or made it into space. If it did make it into space at that speed, it should have passed Pluto sometime around 1961 which would also make it the first man made object to leave our solar system.

Congrats on reading the Nashville bomb thread last week.

How did they estimate the speed of it flying outta here in the late 50's or 60's whenever this was?

Article mentions a high-speed camera.
That's one hell of a potato gun.

I doubt it went anywhere at all. Probably turned into iron vapor instantly

Wouldn’t it actually be a bombhole cover?

How much did this whole exercise cost the US taxpayer?

A shame that Chris's wheelchair wasn't on top of it at the time.

It is very unlikely that the object managed to leave Earth as it would simply not be able to retain its speed given its lack of aerodynamics and other physical earthly forces.
Dang, who would have thought a manhole cover wasn't aerodynamic?
This is the very reason you should always carry an umbrella, that thing may yet come down.

They say this experiment was the best bang for the dollar we ever spent.

Should do it again and monitor it closely.

At 125,000 mph, leaving earth’s atmosphere would take what? 2 seconds?

I didn't see that thread, and I enjoyed reading the OP.

The manhole cover wasn’t the reason for the test.
