A blast powerful enough to launch an iron disk 125,000 mph would obliterate the iron disk.

Is that what basically happened?
Or is that what happened?

Was this part of project Plowshare?

Project Plowshare was the overall United States program for the development of techniques to use nuclear explosives for peaceful construction purposes. As part of the program, 31 nuclear warheads were detonated in 27 separate tests. Plowshare was the US portion of what are called Peaceful Nuclear Explosions (PNE).

How did they estimate the speed of it flying outta here in the late 50's or 60's whenever this was?
They designed the B-52 with an abacus in a month..... I think they could figure this out

the melting point of iron/steel is around 1510C
A nuclear bomb is as hot as the inside of the Sun, which is over 100,000,000C. THat heat dissipates very quickly though.
The tests in New Mexico were hot enough to turn the sand into glass, which needs to be at a minimum 1470C
I seriously doubt this manhole cover survived if it was anywhere near the blast. Beside the shock waves that would have obliterated it, the heat would have melted it instantly.
On top of that, if it was traveling faster than anything we've ever made with spaceships, it would have melted leaving the atmosphere. Our spaceships going 6.8miles/second see temps of 2649C. This thing was supposedly going 5 times faster than that.
It would have had to have been a good distance away from the blast to withstand all of that.

Plus 6 times escape velocity would be 150k mph

So busy trying hard to be edgy you didn’t bother to read the OP I see.

There’s debate on whether or not the cover burned up in the atmosphere or made it into space. If it did make it into space at that speed, it should have passed Pluto sometime around 1961 which would also make it the first man made object to leave our solar system

At the very least, the aliens would have second thoughts about trying to take earth if they saw a few of those whizzing by any time they got too close.
