The Economics Of Travel Ball & Other Questions
Posted by OweO on 2/9/20 at 11:08 am1136
Someone I know has a kid playing in a travel ball tournament this weekend in Hammond. They told me that it cost $9 to get in. It got me thinking.. I assume all of these teams have 9 kids on them right? (god forbid any kid has to sit the bench).
So a team of 9 kids, with each kid probably having an average of 3 people that goes pay to see them play that is $27 each kid brings in for one game. A team of 9 that is $243 and they are guaranteed to play 3 games so a team of 9 that only plays 3 games brings $729 at the gate + concessions.
I assume there is at least 4 teams so if all 4 teams play the minimum 3 games that is $2,916 at the gate + concessions.
Do these facilities hold tournaments every weekend?
And for the parents who have kids in travel baseball how much do you spend a year between traveling, paying to get into games, buying equipment.. I assume it cost to get the teams in a tournament..
And this will piss some people off, but based on my observation, it seems like there are a certain amount of kids who don't really want to play travel baseball, but their parents want them to play a sport and baseball is the easiest sport for kids to play. You can put a kid in right field and if he can get. a hit every once in awhile and you need a 9th kid, then that's easier to find than if you are on a basketball team..
You can't really put a kid on the court who has little skill. Baseball isn't as much as a team sport as football or basketball.
Is that an accurate assessment?

Most teams carry 11-12 kids and you don’t pay gate fees for every game only per day and the tournaments are usually 2 days. But most tournaments don’t charge for kids under 10 or so, yes the people running these things do make money off of them I mean they aren’t doing it for free so little Johnny can play

Usually these tournaments have a weekend pass of $25 per head. Yeah, The Tournament host pulls in a chunk of change!

Everything about this statement is incorrect
Guesstimates:
Equipment: $600+: Glove, Batting Gloves, Bats, Gear Bag, Helmet, Cleats, Uniforms.
Fuel and Lodging: $300 per weekend?
Food: $200
It all pays off with the MLB contract though.
Edit:
What? These kids are expected to be "All Star" material. That means hit for 350 minimum and field for 950 avg. That isn't easy.

I realize they are making money, I am all for it. I am just trying to see what kinda bread we talking.
A baseball field for travel ball that will sell fireworks during Christmas & 4th of July would bring in some bank..
How much do teams have to pay to get in the tournament?

It certainly isn’t cheap. I would like to think that parents who pay for this is because their kids love playing baseball.
My personal opinion Is the multiple baseball seasons in a calendar year shouldn’t start until they are 14-15 and that’s only if the kids are totally consumed and ate up with baseball. Until then kids should play 3-4 sports a year.
I played BREC baseball only until I was 14. It was 12 games a year and I would have loved to play way more baseball then that, but I also enjoyed played a bunch sports that I didn’t want to give up. Still played major college baseball. It’s the parents that think their kid has to specialize in baseball at 10 years old if they want to be great baseball players that are misguided and out of touch with reality

We pay $1,000.00 per year.
4 easy payments of $250.00
Covers jerseys, pants, caps and entry fees in 10 tournaments
Then you have to pay travel expenses, eating out, hotel rooms etc etc etc.
It's expensive but fun and gets my son out of the house/exercise/discipline.

$729 investment for little Johnny will pale to his $10,000,000 annual salary in the big leagues

It’s been a while since we’ve had a good travel ball thread.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but OweO this actually isn’t a terrible thread.

I'll put it this way. If Ryan Theriot gave up Traction to become an assistant coach at LSU, he would take a pay cut.
Most of these tournaments do have to pay to rent facilities, which isn't cheap.
Yet, still travel ball economics are child's play compared to competition dance.
We just got our bill for our kid's first competition.
She is in 5 dances at this competition. Note each one lasts 2-3 minutes.
The group dances, of which she is in 4, are $52 per kid.
Her duet is $75 per kid.
So for her that's $283 for roughly 15 minutes of performance time.
Her four groups consist of, 38, 18, 8, and 8 dancers. So the competition is taking in, for the 38 person group, $950 for a 3 minute dance.
Expenses include facility and a/v rental, travel costs for the judges / staff (they go around the south every weekend), and awards/trophies. They do give some BIG trophies but I'm sure they get a deal on these cause they buy so many.
Now, they don't have a gate fee.
These competition directors have to be rolling in the money.
Her next competition, I might pay $5 for the program and try to figure out how much the gross revenue, from entry fees, is.

Usually a team has 12 or 13, not 9
The rewards are it keeps a kid busy versus in front of a TV 24/7, creating friendships and travel.
After the age of 12, it's a waste unless your kid shows serious potential and wants to play HS Baseball. Showcase Events are legit if your kid has College potential and wants to be seen.
Not to mention playing against quality talent.

This is excellent and can't be stated enough. There are a lot of jealous and joking threads about select baseball but the real racket is girls' dance and it's not even close !
