I am right there with you right when we get rid of the financial support systems.

You want to gamble? You forego your ability to receive welfare if/when your choices result in substantial money loss.

You want to partake in drugs like heroin, fentanyl, meth? You forego your ability to receive state funded medical care.

Freedom is great when it is actual freedom. If society is subsidizing your poor choices, society should have control over your choices.

Remove that safety net and I will back the “freedom” position 100%.

If society is supporting your lifestyle, society should control your lifestyle.

A fool and his money are soon parted. That saying will probably always be true.

I am all for personal freedom but gambling is out of control in society. It needs to be publically shamed like prostitution or being a Falcons fan.

On personal level, i play in a fantasy football league with money buy ins. Overall, i am probably down $500 over say 10 years. I hate just typing that out.

Sad but I believe gambling is worse than people think. I know people that lose their arse on video poker. It’s really hard to watch.

Yeah, there's a video of a guy using the slot machine built in ATM to withdraw $20k from his bank. About 5 seconds later that $20k is down to $17k. I can't fathom losing that much that quickly.

Some people who drink get drunk. So should we outlaw liquor?

This is about as 2024 America as it gets...not believing something that one has not read...and seemingly kind of proud of it....

And you did not read further where I said I was just making fun of The Atlantic and that I do believe they could be correct.

If you're coming here thinking everyone is super serious in each post, then you're coming here for the wrong reasons...

You should ban him, Rummy.

Don’t let him push you around.

We shouldn't prohibit liquor or gambling or most other vices. But we shouldn't be promoting them either.

Legal gambling like we have now is much more accessible. It’s not like the local bookies have apps.

I bet with a bookie on a website on my phone back in 2010 that had a mobile version that worked like an app

They all do shite like that.

The money just didn’t pass through it so it was a “legal” website.

Yes and no. Gambling is an addiction just like nicotine or alcohol. And just like with those substances, addiction creates external problems for society. Bankruptcy costs creditors money. DV speaks for itself. When these internal problems become externalized, society, through government, has an obligation to protect itself.

stop trying to force your morality on others. if they want to gamble let them. it is not your job to protect people from themselves and control others

That is not at all what I wrote.

When the individual's problem becomes society's problem, society should fix it. Otherwise, we just keep paying for these addicts' mistakes.

Was this research done before gambling became legal? When it was illegal, it would probably surprise a lot of people the amount of people who owed a bookie a lot of money.

And although you didn't hear about it, if someone owed a bookie and showed no sign in paying them, the best way for a bookie to get their money was to contact that person's significate other.

A lot of wives don't like the idea that their husband would be exposed for being a degenerate. That would be embarrassing and would not at all fit the image she wants her family to have. Anyway, my point is.. Legalizing gambling only exposes problems that was already an issue. They just have the numbers now to back it up.
