There is also a bit of evolution of the virus in there as well.

A virus that kills its host too quickly can't spread as widely. So, the deadliest forms of the virus wiped themselves out by killing their hosts, leaving us with the slower acting strains that can be more readily controlled with medication.

Pretty sure they found a guy who did some blood tests on hep b patients in the late 70s who still had the samples. Based on tests of that, guy you blame was not patient 0... but still possibly a huge spreader with his lifestyle and travel.

When the virus was discovered. Gays fought tooth and nail against closing the bath houses in San Francisco. They railed against calls to end the promiscuity and the pleas to practice safe sex.

They refused to quit donating blood. Even when gay leaders and community leaders begged them to stop until a test could be developed.

The gay community's reaction to the virus? Blame Ronald Reagan. Claiming he didn't appropriate funding. Hell, we didn't even know what we were fighting, much less what to fund.

This is all documented in Randy Shilts book, And the Band Played On. The book was made into an HBO movie.

Shilts himself was gay and died of AIDS in 1994. He was vilified by the gay community for his honesty.
quote:

Although Shilts was applauded for bringing public attention to gay civil rights issues and the AIDS crisis, he was also harshly criticized (and spat upon on Castro Street) by some in the gay community for calling for the closure of gay bathhouses in San Francisco to slow the spread of AIDS. Fellow Bay Area journalist Bob Ross called Shilts "a traitor to his own kind".

This is why many of the older generations don't share the love for gays that younger people seem to have.

We were alive and remember full well who brought us the AIDS epidemic and how.

Thanks a lot for the Black Plague of the New Millennium.

They eat them there?

It offers a bit of variety from human flesh.

"Hundreds of people allegedly confessed to eating human flesh given to them by one of four men facing cannibalism charges in South Africa, reports say.

The four accused cannibals — Nino Mbatha, 32; Lindokuhle Masondo, 32; Sthembiso Sithole, 31, and 30-year-old Lungisani Magubane — appeared in court on Monday in Estcourt to face charges of murder and conspiracy for allegedly raping, killing, mutilating and then eating the body of a woman, The Witness reports.

One of the suspects allegedly walked into a police station in the central South African town on Friday while holding human body parts, including a leg and a hand, and confessed to being “tired of eating human flesh,” according to the newspaper."

Why isn't he called "Patient One"? If he was the first to go, you'd figure one is more appropriate than zero.

I know they have had to do lots of HIV education in remote villages in many African countries. Some men believed superstitions they were told that having sex with a virgin would cure them. So then you would have young girls being raped and then infected with HIV.

AIDS is a gay man's disease. that's not politically correct and doesn't fit the current pop culture narrative preaching otherwise, but it's the truth.

of course maybe 3% get it from syringes and another 3% get it from heterosexual activity, but well over 90% of AIDS patients got it from gay sex.

There are plenty of heteros out there that have butt sex

I was going to say. Finding patient 0 would seem almost impossible to me.

No "possibly" about it. He was a horrible person who intentionally spread the disease.

Some of his victims later said, he would point to his sarcomas after sex. Then tell his partner, "I have 'gay cancer', and now you have it too."

He continued having promiscuous sex even after he was diagnosed.

Political correctness has scrubbed and rewritten much of the true history of the spread of AIDS.

Yeah, we’re pretty confident the US got it from Haiti around 1969. Likely a single immigrant. There are several stories around shared needles in medical settings both in the Congo and Haiti that present a fairly straight line.

That is infuriating, one of my childhood friends received HIV from a blood transfusion since he was a hemophiliac.

I hope he lived as bravely as Ryan White.

It is shameful the way Ryan and the Ray Brothers of Florida were treated.

This was in the early 90s but I remember having a meeting in our school gym to talk about my friend.
