Back when Haiti was still a somewhat functioning society, a lot of Haitians would travel back and forth to Africa working on development projects. At the same time, Haiti was something of a vacation mecca for North American gays, providing a vector for the disease to spread from Africa to Haiti and thence to the US.

Research. Worked for one of the HIV meds years ago, and worked with physicians treating since the beginning. You can easily find good timelines going back to roughly 1908 that tell the story. It’s amazing how specific some of the old information is. Haitian docs working in the Belgian Congo with glass and steel syringes, scary stuff.
To clarify, wasn’t my research, I worked with docs involved with the research. Just saying I’m on the research side, not revisionist history.

I believe that's, for the most part, true. There's a reason why it was called the Gay Cancer in the early 80s.

For those who are too young to remember, AIDs was a huge deal in the 80s and 90s. The fear mongering was everywhere. Celebrities and their AIDS awareness ribbons at every awards show. Every other commercial on MTV (this is when their shows didn't suck and they actually played music videos) was HIV related. The constant tv specials on AIDS. Movies, like Kids, showing the impact of AIDS on the young population.

The thing is, most of these focused on heterosexuals receiving and transmitting the disease. One rarely saw anything about the rampant promiscuity in the Gay Community being the impetus for HIV. Nor were they willing to point out that homosexual sex, especially anal sex, was one of the main ways to catch AIDS.

I guess they figured if they didn't get the heteros fearing for their lives, then nothing would be done about it.

And that wasn't the only case of intentional infection, but probaly the most wellknown.

Guy was a piece of trash. Damn.

Early 2000’s in Baton Rouge was bad. I would guess that 25% of patients admitted to EKL were HIV positive. Mostly due to opportunistic infections like cryptococcal meningitis or PCP. 90% plus were African American. Over half did not follow up in the ID clinic at discharge.

Mainly they were IV drug uses and guys on the down low.

Since its beginning in the mid-1980s the AIDS epidemic has seen 75 million people become infected and about half of them have died. With a kill rate of nearly 50%, AIDS is a bad motherfricker. Some 37 million people are currently living with the infection. The vast majority of them are heterosexual Africans.
