Article posted today that's long on narrative and short on facts - or what is better known as modern journalism.

LINK

quote:

A pattern has emerged over the past two decades: White, wealthy communities have been separating from their city’s school districts to form their own. According to a recent report from EdBuild, a nonprofit focused on public-school funding, 73 communities have split to form their own school districts since 2000, and the rate of places doing so has rapidly accelerated in the past two years. St. George, which activists seek to incorporate as a city, is a textbook example.

Oftentimes, in these instances, predominantly white parents are trying to break away from a majority-minority school district, which in turn isolates their property-tax dollars in a new district. (Many public schools rely heavily on property taxes.) The argument, then, is that the parents can better dictate how their money is being spent.

St. George is no different. The proposed area is more than 70 percent white and fewer than 15 percent black, while East Baton Rouge Parish is roughly 46.5 percent black. St. George supporters decry the violence and poor conditions of the public schools in Baton Rouge. Their tax dollars, they have argued, aren’t being put to good use. (Representatives for the St. George campaign’s organizers did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this article, including several emails, phone calls, and Facebook and LinkedIn messages.)

Yes, white kids at Woodlawn and Southeast Middle are definitely what I would consider wealthy.

quote:

M. E. Cormier, a spokeswoman for the Better Together campaign, told me. “We went door-to-door, told people about the detrimental effects of the creation of St. George, and we were able to get 1,000 people to withdraw their names from the petition.”

Funny she did not mention that Together BR purposely had people sign the petition in order to remove them at the 23rd hour to subvert the process.

quote:

On their website, St. George supporters argue that the creation of a new city would not negatively affect the City of Baton Rouge; however, a recent study from the City of Baton Rouge–Parish of East Baton Rouge showed a potential $48 million reduction to the city’s budget.

Funny how the article doesn't mention that this is money that is diverted from parish taxes into the city budget to pay for services that the unincorporated area doesn't get.

Imagine that, parents wanting their kids to go to good schools in a community supported by their tax dollars and not bussed halfway across the city to satisfy the quota of a bureaucrat.

The Resegregation of Baton Rouge

Give me a damn break.

Even if every person in St. George was white and wealthy, it's no where close to segregation. That's such a slap in the face to actual segregation.

Like the schools aren't segregated already. I think BR is roughly 40% white and the public schools are 90% black.

There's no chance in hell this guy has any clue how the consolidated City-Parish government works.

Who gives a frick? People should be able to move where they want.

Again, no one gets mad when other races, cultures, or religions set up small communities. But heaven forbid some white people move to an area.

These people think you should sacrifice your children at the altar of shitty public schools.

To be honest, you can't expect an outsider to understand the weirdness and goofiness of the city-parish. It makes no damn sense.

Perhaps this author could try to figure out WHY the "white people" want to "desegregate". Especially if it's happening all over the country.

Eh. There’s plenty of consolidated municipal governments in the US. But journalists don’t like to do research to better understand what they’re talking about.

Gotta love biased journalists taking jabs at average people who dare not want to send their kids to institutional detainment facilities to get their education, but would rather a much better education and better learning environments for their children.

Hey, this isn’t the average citizens fault here. This is Louisiana corruption and a general failure of local public education to provide for people a quality product.

frick this arse hat for putting all that on regular working folks and decrying it as racist undertones.

And this guy is fighting for black colleges. Not much desegregated about that is there?

Doesn’t have to. Doesn’t care. Twist and slant and skew to one conclusion from the reader: wypipo bad.

No kidding. Louisiana is the second worst ranked public education system in the country and EBR is ranked 61st out of 80 districts. But God forbid people try to change the failing system.

Living in Tennessee so haven't been tuned into BR politics. What's going on in St George?

It's going to a vote later this year and the opponents are starting to lose their minds. Very probable that it passes

There’s a reason I pay that ridiculous bill at Parkview. And it ain’t because I want to. Woodlawn is an unacceptable school district for my children. If the public schools near me were of acceptable quality I would GLADLY save the money. No worries, though, I’ll keep paying my taxes so someone else’s kids can go to crappy schools.
