Perhaps people should come to these cities and spend time in the neighborhoods and schools to see where people are coming from.
It is not a white/black issue at it's core. It's a human decency thing.
Some people are mad that their money goes to people that do not care about the community as a whole. On average, people in certain districts do not care about their child's education as much. On average, they do not pay as much into the tax pool. On average, they commit FAR more crimes.
It is about the data showing certain neighborhoods and communities harming the others. And the other neighborhoods and communities paying for everything are tired of it.
I'm sure if the roles were reversed, the largely black community would want to cut off the largely white community. Not because they are largely white, but because they are dragging down progress in the schools and streets.
I would vote no for St. George and put my effort into getting new local politicians for a few personal reasons. But I get why people want it and those that cannot empathize with those people are just too dumb to converse with.
I mean frick, the mayor is openly racist. It is an absolute embarrassment and tragedy. If someone else had won, I think St. George would've lost it's steam. I think she can be blamed for this new momentum almost entirely.

What would actually happen to the kids if they went to “bad” schools?
The schools thing is and always has been a bullshite excuse for you-know-what, and we all know it.
Wait, are you kidding?
You think there is no effect on children if they go to bad schools?

A pattern has emerged over the past two decades: White, wealthy communities have been separating from their city’s school districts to form their own.
Hot off the press: Many white people value education and self-reliance, and do what they can to better their personal situations.

To be fair, the author states that he attempted to contact several leaders of the St George movement, and none of them returned his messages. The article may be one sided, but St George didn't do anything to make sure their view was represented.

You’re the one saying that word, not me. So that confirms that part of it.
If your kid goes to an f school with a 52% graduation rate, what happens to him?
They have a much higher chance of getting into disciplinary trouble both at school and at home. They also have a much higher chance of doing poorly on standardized testing. And a much lower chance of getting into strong colleges.
I mean, are you just being a troll? That isn't a race thing. That is a "good teachers and smart, well-behaved classmates improve a child's chances of success" thing. Parents can't control everything and be with their kid all the time. It matters who they are with all day every day for most of the year when you're not around. That shite wears off on your child.

He has no idea. He just thinks he looks cosmopolitan agreeing with an Atlantic writer. He refuses to go any deeper

To be fair it’s an Atlantic article so it’s certainly slanted as frick no matter who the writer did or didn’t talk to

You really think they wouldn’t take quotes out of context and try to paint St. George in a bad light?

He was definitely implying that it was all about race.

Baton Rouge is not segregated enough if you ask me.

They may have, but at least St George would have a reason to complain. You can't bitch about being misrepresented when you wouldn't even talk to him.

Maybe not, but both my parents live outside the area and I have this deep seeded fear that Baton Rouge will turn in Jackson, MS if St. George happens.
I've spent a lot of time in Jackson and Madison (wife from there) and it's really sad what has happened to that city.
I think it could end up being really bad for LSU as well. The neighborhoods surrounding it will get worse and worse. Downtown will regress.
Again, I don't blame the St. George people for looking out for their own. I get it. Baton Rouge has screwed the pooch. Damn shame the current mayor was elected and we couldn't get someone better to run, I think she was definitely beatable.

however, a recent study from the City of Baton Rouge–Parish of East Baton Rouge showed a potential $48 million reduction to the city’s budget...“What happened in Zachary and Central,” two other communities that split from East Baton Rouge, “was because of white flight,” he told me, and “for a city the size of Baton Rouge, it has been devastating.”
Why do communities not in city of Baton Rouge devastate the city by forming their own cities? If they actually do devastate the city financially then that’s proof along with Baton Rouge not attempting to annex these areas that there is a problem with the city of Baton Rouge. Better question would be why is it ok for the city to milk these communities without annexation to the point their only option is to incorporate to fend city off.
It’s always funny to see people within Baton Rouge complain about those they don’t want in as part of Baton Rouge forming their own city.
EBR public schools are bad and district is too spread out with larger communities outside of Baton Rouge city that are less rural now than back when deseg started (same issue why BR city-EBR Parrish consolidation govt needs to be reformed). This started before end of deseg order. Once Zachary and Central happen there was only one path to progress and competing district wide with private schools - to continue breaking it apart and give people more choices. EBR school district has already burned bridges with middle and upper class whites by continuing to play race card and blame white flight while not looking at themselves and working on their issues. If they really believed racism was reason for people avoiding EBR public schools they could have easily proved themselves right by improving when others formed their own districts, and they wouldn’t avoid talking about Baker splitting off.

The universally-accepted narrative in circles that include people who actually think is that parental involvement matters far more than school quality; hence, throwing money into public schools never solves problems.
So if we assume this is true, then why would any functional parent want to send their kid to a failing school which - by your definition - is populated with kids whose parents don’t care?

quote:I’ve worked at all types of schools. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that parental involvement solves all solvable “problems.” The St. George motives are obvious, and the fact that I don’t even have to say it for people to be bothered by what I must be thinking confirms it.
Go volunteer at one.

Sure, but PR 101 knows that its almost always better to have "No Comment" than to give sound bites to someone with ulterior motives.
Donald Trump could say "I am giving my entire fortune to poor black people" and CNN would have a headline saying "Trump refuses to give aid to Hispanic children". (ftr, I am no Trumpkin, just using him to make this point)
