Extremely impressive if she legit did this, pretty damn questionable to be faster than men especially in an endurance event like this.
The endurance aspect is more important than the speed here, and thats what youre missing. This is all shes doing and all she has to do all day for 40 days. A really good marathon time is under 2 hours and 30 minutes. Shes doing multiple a day, but she doesn't do any of them in that amount of time.
Also just from a longevity point, men weigh more and what might be a small tweak for a lighter person can turn into a bigger injury for someone heavier. A lot of people say running is bad for heavy people because its bad on their knees, when the reality is that studies show the knees can handle the pressure fine but that it just makes you more likely to get injured because you have more weight coming down on the leg in general. So you "wearing your knees out" was actually just an injury at some point and not this gradual wearing down of the joint.

I would’ve happily eaten her arse immediately after she was done, pre-shower

Yes, there's separate record keeping for supported vs unsupported. With supported she'd have likely had someone with her to set pace, carry water/fuel/etc. to save energy, running to set waypoints to meet up with support teams for sleep/recovery/resupply, then keep going again. Even still, quite an impressive achievement.
These ultra people are just on freakish levels. The guy she beat out, Karel Sabbe, has held/holds records on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail(2650mi from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, & Washington), and is one of the few who's completed the Barkley Marathon.

Barkley Marathons next?
First Female finisher was last year. With her speed, she can try to go after the current record of 52 hours. Or...just be happy to finish the damn thing.

although your profile picture is clearly stolen valor, you are exactly right.
endurance events like this are way, way more than just raw athleticism. i didnt check the math, but someone said she was probably averaging 3pmh for 16 hours a day. that is certainly impressive, but for context, 3mph is normal walking speed. now obviously she's going to be going faster and slower than that based on terrain, but it's not like 3mph is blazing fast. in addition to being lighter, she's also not carrying a load, which is a huge factor as well.
and all that is saying nothing about the mental aspect of it as well. some people are just mentally tougher than others and can push through pain and discomfort.
it is not "pretty damn questionable" for her to have beaten the men's record.

Without reading anything on it at all...........
Designated areas to get to each day. Food / tents set up and taken down for her. Hydration along the way so she didn't have to carry anything extra.
Either way..... pretty awesome.

quote:By this logic, anyone attempting to set a record or win a championship in an athletic event is just "looking for self-recognition." While there may be a grain of truth in that, it's highly reductive. No one watches sports just to see that everyone had a good time.
I really wish these people looking for self-recognition would pick another trail for events like this.
Also, the Appalachian Trail seems like the ideal course to set the Appalachian Trail speed record. Where else would you suggest she attempt it?

My granddaughter and her friend just finished the complete AT (took them five months!), but met Tara Dower while they were on the trail.

54 miles a day for 40 days is absolutely insane. The human body isn’t supposed to take that level of punishment

he should have done it northbound like a man and ended on the most difficult stretch after a month of running.
Ya, North to South is downhill the entire way! I kid I kid!

Looks like she was being supported in this endeavour, people I have known who hiked the AT had a good size pack on their backs.

Fun fact: Lesbians were the victims of the majority of the murders that occurred along the AT .

ETA: for the downvoters please share some other stories where women have the speed records over men
A woman has previously held the speed record over men on the AT before. Jennifer Pharr Davis for example.

Jennifer Pharr Davis
Time: 46d 11h 20m
Date: 2011-07-31
Jennifer Pharr Davis first set the female supported AT FKT in 2008. In 2011 she finished in 46d 11h 20m, nearly a day faster than Andrew Johnson’s record from 2005. Her all-gender record stood for 4 years until it was broken by Scott Jurek. Her 2011 attempt is still the current supported female FKT. Both her attempts were completed traveling southbound.
Pharr Davis also holds the female self-supported Long Trail FKT which she set in 2007. She was named one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year in 2012. She lives in Asheville, NC.

Her knees are going to be fricked when she's 50. Have fun with that

If we had Jet-Packs by now, we'd break that record easily.

Something fat people love saying to runners, seemingly unironically
