have never found the prices any better than hotels after fees.
One difference is they both add the fees, taxes and surcharges at checkout which they define very differently, AirB&B you see before you ever get there, hotels just add them to the bill you get when you "checkout".

I mean I just booked an Air BnB in the city - an entire beautiful house - for 45 days for ~$2700.
A hotel room for 45 days of that quality would have cost me like $10000.

Thats definitely not the norm

Just curious, which city?
And I think the common theme that has been shown in this thread is that extended stays and stays with several people is usually better to use AirBnB than a hotel. That's not even up for debate.
Going somewhere for 2 or 3 nights with a few people is much better to do a hotel in general.

They are certainly there if you look. Not every Air bnb gouges cleaning fees.

For families traveling on vacation, a house with a kitchen and laundry makes much more sense than getting two hotel rooms.
So there will continue to be a market for these type of rental facilities

Prove it. What economic indicators reveal we are in a recession? Do you know?
I'll wait for your answer.

All the fees certainly don’t help.
back at Christmas, we rented a house in Blue Ridge, GA. It was listed as about 500 a night and we rented it for 3 nights. Check in was at 4, they texted us at 3:50 saying that we weren't going to be able to check in until after 7 with no reimbursement of putting us out for 3 hours. It was snowing and it was on a mountain so getting to it was only going to get tougher.
Long story short, the 500 a night for 3 nights cost closer to 3k after the fees and check in was delayed 3 hours. The cleaning fees are some serious bullshite. I think the cleaning fee was close to 400 or 500 for that house and they told us to take the garbage out when we left.

Yeah I wouldn’t want strangers in my primary residence while I was on vacation
The whole problem with AirBnB is that people are taking what could be others’ primary residences and trying to make money on them by renting them out

But you still booked it knowing that?

I rented a BnB in College Station for the LSU game last November. We checked in fine Friday evening. We out to dinner, and went and had some drinks. Got back to the BnB around 11:00pm and the keypad to the door wouldn’t let us in. Tried for an hour to get in touch with the host and he wouldn’t answer his phone. We finally said F it, and broke a window. Went in and got our stuff and left and went to a hotel. The host finally called me at like 8am the next morning as was apologizing but I told him we already left and needed a full refunded. He did refund our entire weekend. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for BnB’s

This is where people just don’t understand Airbnb. Airbnb is not trying to capture the hotel audience. Airbnb is trying to capture a family of six or eight. Nobody’s going to a hotel to do that. Have they been getting a little wild with fees? Yes, but I have 10 and they ain’t slowing down at all.

Investors bought hundreds of properties in blighted areas of the city, rebuilt them and have created a property value boom for all of the other owners. I don’t give two fricks about what all those people are bitching about when they sat on their hands with all the blighted properties, and said nothing for years. It’s the equivalent of the assholes moving to New Orleans around bars with music and then start complaining that there’s music after they buy a house.

My parents did. It was a family trip that was pseudo last minute so they booked it and just told us what our part of it was. they sent a few places and then when they booked it and said it was close to 1k each it took me back.
I'm about done with AirBnb. I will stay at a true BnB or a hotel for now on, the upsides of Airbnb are gone now.

I liked Airbnb back in 2016 because I could rent a cot in a bedroom for like 20 bucks a night. I debated renting our guest room out at my house I just bought for some beer money on days we will be home, but we'd have to jump through hoops just to get 50 bucks a night.
I've only done a couple airbnbs since, but trying to use their website and only finding insane fees after clicking multiple things got annoying as hell, and I switched back to hotels.

If your only complaint is price,\ then Motel 6 or Super 8 will likely be more to your liking and you can even leave the light on.
