Yeah it’s inevitable. Lift weights to extent possible and get good sleep along with other proven lifestyle habits to reduce risk of dementia. Then pray for luck.

It's only 73 in Louisiana. We die young, but we live life hard.

I am not afraid of physical disability. The prospect of dementia terrifies me. An acquaintance of my parents shot himself after a diagnosis. I don't fault him a bit.

Lesson? Do what you want to do before you hit 70-75. It’s hard for people to comprehend, but life goes south quick after that. Nothing is guaranteed. Retire as soon as you can, too. Maybe you won’t have as much at 88 years old, but it won’t matter that much anyway.

The real secret to success as you age

Not pretty
Not young
Not smart
Not wealthy

Lord blessed me tho with the ability to look like I know how to dance.

I dont know why, but i am more afraid of being physically incapacitated than i am of mental dementia…. Im not saying i *want* to be demented when im old, just that not being able to do my running or tennis or just walking around and living without pain are things that keep me sane…. At least if i lost my mental capacity, i would not know, or wouldnt realize, how old and miserable i am .

My iconologist treated me for prostrate cancer & am going on 4+ yrs post radiation & my PSA# is still in the 0's...0 to 4 is normal. He told me that 90% of his patients don't live out their normal cancer life expectancies because their body is in bad shape already, smoking & obesity, not active. My cardiologist, primarily for routine annual checkups, told me the same thing. Both said I am ahead of the game, at the time early 70's, because I am active, never smoked & have always watched my weight. Smoking & obesity are both killers.

I am 62, could really tell the difference hauling all my shite down the stairs to move vs hauling more shite up the stairs at 54. That made me start walking, seems to be going well, will add some body weight exercises. My sleep has been crappy though, looking into that.

This is an interesting thread. Thanks for starting it.

only guy I envy is the poster who says he has LSU sports to follow, both of my schools are mediocre to just flat bad.

My granny used to go out drinking and playing cards with her friends. She started drinking wine every day at 5PM until she was 76.

She suddenly started to become forgetful. As in, leaving the grocery store and forgetting where she parked. Soon after, they had to take her keys away from her and within a year she was put into a home. She passed away 2.5 years later. So maybe there is something to mid 70s where you hit a point where things just start trailing off.

I guess if you only have memory issues, but a lot of people have terrifying hallucinations or delusions. People are stealing money from them, their home is not their home, their spouse is trying to hurt them. It can be really awful. And many of them are at least somewhat aware that something is wrong with them.

Yeah. Death sucks.

I'm pretty sure that is the opposite of the OPs point.

I used to be scared of death. Now I'm scared of the preliminaries. You don't hear too many old people talking about being afraid of dying. For many of them it's a relief of their suffering and a chance to join all their friends and loved ones, wherever that may be.
