Mostly Military Policemen. Not the sharpest arrows in the US Army's quiver. (J/K guys - you know I think you cats are the best.) The military intelligence folks that got caught up in this remain a huge head scratcher for me. Normally smarter than average and generally well versed in what one can and cannot do with prisoners, the chain of events that led down the path to what happened boggle my imagination.
Frankly - a failure of leadership allowed this frat house environment to flourish. Normally the military intelligence (interrogation/exploitation) and military police (security/confinement) work together to accomplish the output goals, and this has always had the potential to go wrong. I always assumed that potential was for a pushing of the envelope to go too far. Not for "Lord of the Flies" to break out in a military prison.

There's also the Egyptian-American translator that allegedly raped a 15 year old boy while female soldiers took pics. I think a lot of people defending these guys are unaware that there were over 1300 pictures and less than a hundred were deemed fit for release.
For perspective, they released pics of men being forced to masturbate and perform oral on each other. That means there are at least 1200 pics worse than those.

That's very disturbing and makes me question why these people didn't get longer sentences.
The love triangle with Graner is also really disturbing with the fact he knocked up one female also involved and married another involved while he was still in prison before the birth of the illegitimate child.

I have a dear friend who did a tour in Afghanistan as a prison guard....he's pretty much fricked in the head with PTSD now.
from the things he has told me, its a pretty fricked up place to be...and the military's finest are not the ones they put there....he volunteered during the Navy IA program...he had no idea where he was going to be put...just that he felt he should go over there.
that said...what these particular individuals did is inexcusable...I get the whole deal about trying to get informants to give up info that could save American lives....but this shite was sick , twisted, and perverted.
Just because your enemy is a POS...doesn't mean you have to dip that far to be dominant and own their arse...especially when you already had the upper hand.
My friend was over there well after all this took place...and he said the red tape was ridiculous. These few were bad eggs...that should not have been allowed that type of access by their leadership...and they screwed over all those that would come after them...
these Americans deserved whatever punishment they got and probably more.
and I HATE hajis.

A) a lot of these people were innocent
B) It's been proven time and again that torturing people doesn't yield good intel. When people are being tortured, they'll say whatever the interrogators want to hear to make it stop.

To hell with those terrorist! They gave up their right to be treated like a human due to their fanatical and cruel ideology. I doubt they were placed in prison because they were buying bread at the local bakery.... none deserve any respect or mercy. That is between them and their God who tells em to kill all infidels!

The worst thing that happened at Abu Ghraib was the guards were dumb enough to take pics. If you’re gonna do stupid shite don’t take pics. And for the love of God, don’t email them or post them on the internet.
