Fwiw, they should. The power to move the water and chemical to treat it don't cost much at all. The cost is in infrastructure and maintenance. If you pipe burst underground and use $1k in water, that's a windfall for them... Assuming you don't get them to credit your bill.
The lions share of the bill is not for the potable water but for sewage. A leak isn’t going into the sewer, so it should be easy to adjust the bill based on abnormal consumption. For those with sprinkler systems, some municipalities allow for a second irrigation bill that is much cheaper.

At 90 PSI, a Fluidmaster PRO45H fill valve should deliver roughly 3–4 gallons per minute (GPM) under typical installation conditions.
So, the typical toilet fill valve at 90 psig water pressure will only pass 960 gallons in a 4 hour period,
4 GPM X 60 Minutes X 4 hours =960 gallons

Same thing happened to me but I left the house filling my pool twice overnight

I got in an argument with some retard at water office yesterday, he said he was going to get with "The Technician', do some research and for me to call back Monday.
SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE you are
Meanwhile I googled my town/ water bill problems and found a facebook page with hundreds of people complaining about the same thing, none had gotten any relief.

I had lighting strike my yard a few years ago while we were on vacation. It actuated every sprinkler valve I had but the pressure wasn’t enough to completely turn them on so they just leaked. It took a few days for me to realize it on my Ring camera since if rained just about every day.
My water bill went from $35-$40 to 290. Water company didn’t do anything.

Well after raising hell and explaining that there's no way to use 20,000 gallons of water in a day without a fire hydrant, the city geniuses adjusted my bill to $126.00.

Nice! Did you use some of the calculations some posters made to make your point?

Just registered from being a lurker to just give a simple service announcement as a water guy myself. A customer can absolutely use 20k gallons of water in a single day.
Secondly, either they are dumb or feel sorry for you, so take advantage of it and find out where the water went, change toilet flappers, ect, before it happens again or worse and they don't help you out.

garden hose maxes out at about 1k gallons/hr. 30k gallons is a lot of water in four hours
I’m guessing OP has a 3/4” residential meter. If so, I don’t see how it’s physically possible to run the125 gpm necessary to have 30,000 gallons of usage in a 4 hour period. Get the specs on the meters the municipality is using and have them explain it to you.
Posted on 10/13/26 at 3:39 pm to GeauxldMember
Its not. The highest I've seen a meter run is ~30 GPM. That said, the OP's image is "Daily Interverals" so at least based on the data he is providing; it didn't run 125gpm.

First, he said very plainly this was a 4 hour time frame. As a water guy, I'd delete your first ever post honestly

But the image he posted is a daily data log from 7-01-26 to 10-05-26 with "Daily Interval" at the bottom. I mean you can even count the ten bars between the dates at the bottom of the image...
He may have more data he didn't post, I don't know. But that graph isn't hard to read.

Hmmm. Ten bars, 24 hours. What happens when you divide 24 by 10?
Does that give you a certain period of time represented per bar?

Umm, this was his OP image. Yours doesn't even match his dispute date. You're looking at August? Why?
