Did EV fans really think they were going to get a free ride?
Gullible mo-fos they are.

EVs not only use the roads they also use the electrical grid
They’re already paying grid use fees to charge.

Texas gas tax = $.20 per gallon. To reach $200 would require the purchase of 1,000 of gas, for a 30 mpg car that means 30,000 miles per year to reach the equivalent EV tax. Doesn't seem exactly fair.
And you don't pay gas at all and have the use of public chargers.
I would absolutely take that deal.

Only the most delusional people thought they would get a free ride. I think people wanted a fair tax and this isn’t it. But it’s still a nothing burger for people who can afford EVs.
The humor in Texas bending over for Tesla then penalizing a bunch of EVs is pretty great though. It’s just typical politics.

'Fair' is a word invented so that idiots and children have a way to make an argument.

Why should someone be penalized for not using fuel?
Because they are as heavy as frick and put wear and tear on the roads.
The roads don’t fix themselves.

They weigh an insignificant amount more than luxury vehicles in the same class. The difference certainly doesn’t align with the excess. The gap doesn’t make sense unless you acknowledge that the Texas legislation hasn’t been able to increase fuel taxes but was able to do this because they knew it would get the anti-EV crowd all horned up rather than get things in alignment across the board. I know expecting politicians to actually do their job is a foreign concept but maybe one day we’ll get there.

Knighting for excessive taxes seems like an odd stance but you do you.

Politicians do their job, they work reliably for the the donors who give them money.

If a 5k lb car did significantly more damage than a 4k lb car, a single 20k lb semi would destroy the road.
Does it damage your truck more to haul a 5k lb trailer vs a 4k lb one when it's capable of hauling 10k?

They will last longer as we drip less and less motor oil on them.
Btw I have no problem with EVs paying road taxes, it's just the weight argument is bunk.

E-vehicles use the roadways that require resurfacing, restriping, signage, etc. just like regular vehicles. Those vehicles are taxed via gasoline/diesel.

It’s is not a $200 fee in top of normal fees. I believe it is adjusting their registration fees to add in the road use Tax. Take $80 from that fee since everyone else still pays that re-register their car annually in Texas and it’s basically $120 fee. If you assume an average MPG of 30 which is absurd by the way, it’s like 18,000 miles. A more reasonable average (still likely high) of 25 mpg gives you 15,000 which is reasonable for most Texas drivers.
Everyone using the roads should pay the taxes, why should EV users get around that when as others said they are also putting a huge strain of the electric grid.
This is the problem with EV users. They act like their cars use nothing when they use in some cases more.

You didn’t think the state was just going to try to break even on this did you? This is calculated to about double the revenue stream.

Do you have a link that says it is not on top of the normal fees?
Here are two that say it is:
quote:
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles announced on Tuesday that starting Sept. 1, those who own an electric vehicle (EV) in the state must pay an additional $200. This is on top of the usual $50.75 plus tax for most passenger vehicles.

That is such a thoughtless quip.
Do you believe the laws (criminal and civil) should be equally applied to all citizens? If so make a cogent argument regarding "why it should" without using the concept of fairness/equity.

It should be $10k/yr so they can begin preparing for all the battery disposal nightmares that are coming. Also, since EV drivers are so concerned about the environment, and since EVs are worse for the environment in their construction, and power demands from an already struggling grid, an extra fee of $5k should be added to each vehicle at purchase. Also, since they are so quiet, every EV should be fitted with a loud, obnoxious beeper horn that beeps whenever the vehicle is on. All of this should be retroactive, of course. It's for the environment. It's for the children. It's about public safety.

But double whatever fee Texas is charging.

How do they get the electricity to charge it, and the vehicle still puts wear and tear on the roads.

Weight of those cars will destroy roads over time. Need taxes for road repair. Also get rid of tax incentives for EVs.
