The last time I visited Panama was at Christmas in 1989. Took a direct flight from NC, which was crowded and loud. The plane didn't even land, my friends and I had to disembark at 500 ft in the middle of the night. We were shot at upon arrival. The food was all packaged in plastic and cardboard and tasted exactly like similar food in the US. The open-air accommodations were minimal, and the bugs were prevalent. The weather was not bad, and fortunately, it was the beginning of the dry season, but nobody explained that to the dew point.
Thank you for your service.

I have a hard time believing that Amarillo is that dangerous

It’s a very poorly written article (journalism is dead) but I think they meant;
“We were paying $1,900 a month for just our house in the States, and here we are paying around $1,700 a month for all our living expenses.”

Panama is pretty nice. Panama City is very modern and affluent. Lots of expats living down there for good reason.

Wish more of them would go. That said, good luck. I have friends who lived in Panama and Nicaugura as missionaries for many years. It wasn’t easy.

And behind rich tourist culture looks like the ghetto, including CR.

Still safer than Shreveport, LA

How long before someone from the U.S. has to ether go rescue them or retrieve the bodies?
In fairness, that could happen in Cincinnati too.

I have a former co-worker that moved to Panama for retirement. He has a nice house on the side of a mountain in Sorá. He loves it.
My dad was stationed at the Panama Canal when Fort Clayton was still open. He said that if not for his family obligations here, he'd pack his stuff and move right back.

I suspect most who post on the OT couldn’t find Panama on a map much less accurately describe its crime and safety numbers in 2025.
But if I were to relocate south, I guess Costa Rica would be a consideration.
Diving would be the biggest draw for me.

He said he was in a jungle, not a city

Eta this thread will be bumped when the inevitable tragic ending occurs.
More than likely, they will tire of living abroad. Everyone eventually misses the conveniences and luxuries of living in the US once they leave. Not saying they won't enjoy Panama, but I have yet to talk to anyone who leaves the US for some third world "tropical paradise" that doesn't eventually return. The shite you put up with living here doesn't seem to be so important once you move away. At least that's been my observation.

I poked my head down the ex-pat rabbit hole just out of curiosity. All kinds of Youtube channels and websites dedicated to this. Several patterns emerge: (1) the grass is never greener, (2) most of them are slightly crazy or anti-social in some way and they think moving to another time zone will magically make their problems disappear and (3) about 90% of them eventually return to the US following the failed experiment.
I do feel bad for some of the older people who have no socioeconomic safety net and they are broke and sickly and trying to figure out how to live off a $1600 social security check.
